Purpose of ABRSM ?

I am sitting Grade 2 Violin this year with ABRSM, and my mother raised a valid point "Why do you actually sit these exams ?"

Well, I expected to know immediately, but I did not, can anybody help me?

Why do I need to sit these exams ?

I think I need a better explanation of what the exams actually entail.
