I first read this when I was about 11 or 12 years old and it struck a chord, not just for it's post appocalyptic themes but because it was about young outsiders who had something different about them that couldn't be identified but was feared and scorned by a cultural/social climate of religious facism.
Even today sometimes, when I look around at the NT world around me, the little insincere ballet, the circus of mundanity and stupidity, I feel a little like I did when I read that book for the first time while dodging school bullies and harrassment.
