When I quickly glance over the discussions here it appears no one listens to rap music. I'm actually surprised that it seems to trigger such a minimal response from Aspies. I know I fell in love with rap music because it was like taking a conversation and chopping up the syllables to match a mathematical formula that fits the tempo and rhythm of a song. Artists like Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Kool G Rap, Nas, Eminem, Big L, Masta Ace and quite a few others seem like they would attract a lot of like minded people.

Or am I the only one?

I'm into it a bit. I like Tech N9ne, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, MF Doom, Dangermouse, Madlib, Wu-Tang Clan, The Roots, 2 Skinnee J's.

no you're not.

although my taste is very limited and old skool and entirely down to my husband, without him i would have never considered it more than background music in hip clothes shops,.

i prefer dre, tupac, eminem, snoop dog ( idiotic mysogynist!! ! but good music ), mary j. blige and eve/estefani ( well only that one dre song "let me blow ya mind" ).
run DMC, NWA and the like are too aggressive for me - listening to some of the songs actually makes me really aggressive.

my husband used to point out the individual rythms and quirks, so now i can tell my methodman from xibit, 8O.
not bad for someone, who actually ever "listened" to her first rap song in 2001 at the age of 30, :D.

what i can relate to is your point of the compartmentalizing the sung song, which in itself becomes more of an instrument than a conveyor of meaning to me.
my mother tongue is not english, so i can easily switch of the meaning of a rap song and just enjoy the rhythm and then cringe afterwards, what womanhating filth i was listening to all along, lol

I like all types of music, and Hip Hop is on that list, as well. 8)

Look what YouTube has done, to me.

I was really into hip hop for a while. Favourites would be Masta Ace, One Be Lo, A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, The Roots.

I like really old early hip hop like grandmaster flash etc. they play it in Birmingham market sometimes and it is very uplifting.

I hate modern popular rap, with a passion. Because they themselves have no passion in their music. D;

I do enjoy rap music from the "Golden age" of hip hop, however, like artists in the 80's and 90's, such as Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, etc... and I like some underground hip-hop.

I think the only modern pop rapper I can tolerate is Jay-Z, and maybe Kanye West.

Wow. That's awesome. I'm not trying to sound like one of those guys who brags about knowing "celebrities" or anything like that, but I know some of those guys I've bolded. I hosted a college radio show that brought on a few guests. One Be Lo was supposed to be a guest once, but I flipped out and ended up standing him up (this was before I even knew about the whole AS thing). He was really cool and understanding about it, which makes him a definite thumbs up guy in my book. As for Slum, I consider DJ Dez (their tour DJ) a friend of mine. He made a stop by my show that resulted in us talking for a couple hours on-air about rare records that I don't think anyone enjoyed (haha). I went to his house and chilled in his basement one night too while he made a beat and he didn't object to my compulsively digging through his record collection either. He's a real cool cat, and everytime we cross paths it's great. I went to school with T3's sister too, and everybody in that camp (including the D12 camp that actually came from the same clique back in the Hip Hop Shop) was always cool to me. So yeah, keep listening to those guys man! On top of being talented I can personally vouch for them being good people as well.

Ha, name dropping

That's really cool. Pity you stood One Be Lo up, he strikes me as being a very cool cat, very smart and interesting.

D12 and SV coming up from the same place strikes me as strange, but there you go. Interesting.

I keep coming back to SV, I don't know why, must be the beats are just so goooood.

a) too much of it is about violence, violence against cops, and mistreating women
b) Half the time its too fast to follow the lyrics or too slangy for me to follow the lyrics
c) Depresses me because my rythmic ability is nothing even in the same ballpark to most of these guys

But I do like some stuff on occasion. Rap music does occasionally have some really clever lyrics. But normally my interest is just one off songs as opposed to really being into that genre - examples that I like -

Massive Attack - I Against I
Pimpin All Over The World
Outkast - Aquemini
