I can't stand pop music. Most of the time, it's stuff I can't relate to in the slightest. Love songs? I haven't felt love before. Relationship songs? I'm not interested in a "relationship" unless it's long term. Party songs? I'm not a partier. You get the point.

That's it. It's all the same, boring, trash. I'm open to being corrected, but this always seems to be true. Pop music never does anything outside of the box. Lyrically, it's always the same thing and they're usually themes that NTs relate to more than Aspies. Musically, it's the same four chords being played over and over and over and over again. Originally, there's not an ounce of it. If I wanted any musical mood - beauty, emotional, depressed, expressive, hopeful, adventurous, etc... I never find that in pop music, it's always other genres.

I know it's not an Aspie thing, since there's a lot that do listen to pop. I guess, where do you guys find the value in pop music?

I guess it's a bit of a rant.

Agree 100%, pop music isn't about originality, talent or even music. It's there to convince 14-year-old girls to give money to record companies (not performers), and 14-year-old boys to think that if they buy it too, 14-year-old girls will happily turn into scantily-clad rap-sluts and 'make out' with them. It all just seems to me like selling cigarettes to kids, 'Hey, wanna be coooooool? Gotta have a smoke hangin' out your mouth!'

I LOVE pop music & it is a special interest for me. I like it cuz it has a good beat & I have ADHD & I'm also very immature; I have the maturity of a 13year-old :P I hear that these studies about people's taste in music say that pop fans are usually very happy in their lives :D I think I may be an exception but I do feel happier listening to it. Some people think it's gay for a guy my age to like pop thou or they think it's perverted when it is NOT.

I think the pop music industry is mostly about marketing & promotion. Some kids like it because it gets forced on em. The industry markets it in kid's TV programs & other kid stuff

Well, I don't like much of today's pop music. I mostly like pop music from the 80s.

I find enjoyment in pop songs at times, if it has a good enough beat and melody to exercise with. However, I find that I tire of pop songs much faster than I tire of my preferred genre of music, techno. Twice as fast, if the play counts on iTunes are anything to go by.

I too hate pop songs, but I have no problem with songs about love and sex. Having very strong emotional and sexual feelings myself I find that I can relate.

Love songs just make me sad because I haven't felt love that much from people, and despite being emotional I haven't felt that emotion towards someone in specific. But enough of whining... >.>

@ Alethes - If anything, MJ would turn me on to pop. I guess I should say 'modern pop'... his Thriller album for example, was 80's "pop", but it was also brilliant. It had the typical elements of pop, but had a lot of melody, and the lyrics weren't stupid.

@ nick007 - I wouldn't say ADHD has much to do with it (ADHD would make me prefer fast-paced metal music), but I guess the 'happy' part makes sense, since I have depression so I don't enjoy pop music. But I don't know if I'd go as far as to say that there's that much of a correlation there. :P

I love most pop music - but then, I love most music in general. Plus, 1) I don't care about whether or not I can relate to the lyrics, and 2) although I have a preference for experimental stuff, music doesn't have to do anything 'outside the box' for me to like it.

I do agree that pop music is not obviously experimental, but that seems to me to be almost a tautology. I mean, it's pop music. Of course it's not obviously experimental. This is the case for the majority of the mainstream music of most genres.

I disagree with your claim that pop music contains the same four chords over and over again. That's just false, and even if it was true, there is much more to music, for me least, than the chord progressions. From what I've heard, pop music is reasonably musically complex; the most musically simple genres are probably dance, rap, punk, and extreme drone stuff like early Earth (I like all of those genres, by the way).

.

I love good rock music. I like to sing along with great songs. I need to sing in order to be happy. I hate it when I am stuck in silence and am missing the comfort of music. Music is structured and helps me shutting out chaos.

The only value "Pop" music has is that it sells. Period. As a category, that is all the word pop means. Top selling. Period. Any genre of song can become a pop song. Pop doesn't mean it's bad. There are many very good pop songs. Most, I agree are worthless garbage though, from an artistic standpoint.

99% of pop today - Justin Beiber and all the Disney s**t - is crap for kids to buy. The rest of it - Adam Lambert, Fall Out Boy, Green Day - is music that gets popular because the people honestly have impeccable voices (as in the former) or are amazing lyricists (as in the latter 2).

Lots kids consider Fall Out Boy to be EMO & Green Day to be punk rock. As much as I like the Disney stuff I think you are rite about it being cr@p for kids cuz some of that stuff is very inappropriate for the target audience & those singers should NOT be considered role models & looked up to like they are. Disney is also the #1 choice for perverts as well :o But then again the Disney stuff is probably no worse influence for kids than Katy Perry & Lady 8arms Gaga. Nickelodeon's artist are more appropriate for kids but Miranda Cosgrove & Jennete McCurdy get much less air play & media exposure than Disney :(
Another rezone I like pop is because I also have an obsession with comedy music & lots of parody songs are based on pop stuff. Even if you guys hate the originals; you mite could get a good laugh out of some of those songs making fun. I also find some of the current pop stuff so bad; I think it's hilariously funny like the Katy Perry Peacock song
