I understand a lot of people aren't even aware that grabbing a digital copy of something does anyone any harm, but I have to jump in and point out that it does. I'm not talking about cases where the author or musician gives away their own work: in that case, go ahead and enjoy with a clear conscience.
And I don't care if the RIAA or any of those interests go belly up. They aren't creators. There was good music before they existed, and there will continue to be long after they've been forgotten.
But creators spend a lot of time and energy creating the books you want to read. They are real people - and they depend on the money they get from being paid for copies of their creation. Except for a very few authors who sell millions and millions of copies, they don't get rich, either. Not even close. I know of one good, solid midlist author who in 2008 made less than $10,000 for the entire year. There are people in minimum wage jobs who make as much and more... So they really need every single royalty they can get. If they don't get paid, they can't write another book. They'll have to find something else to do. In a sense, you're stealing from yourself, because you're making it less likely there will be more books you want to read.
(Now, buying a PDF because you don't want to be seen reading a book is fine. But getting your hands on one "just floating around" because you can't afford it is a different thing altogether. They aren't all that expensive; I manage to save up enough to get the stuff I really want, and I'm so far below the poverty line there are people who are defined as "poor" who I consider pretty well off.)
