I'm not good at playing actual drums. My dad used to play and we've always had a set.

I'm good at makeshift drumming stuff though for some reason. Drumsets just have too many parts to think of at once. Bewildering.

I taught myself how to play the bongos, and learned how to play the djembe from a Senegalese griot.

Yeah, I play. Started when I was 6 and am now 38 -- so on and off for more than 30 years? Enjoy playing everything: classical/symphonic, rudimental/marching, jazz, rock, funk, etc., etc., etc. Live in an apartment, so no "real" drums at home -- just electronic pads, which I'm not crazy about. Real drums only, though, when I play out.

Any specific questions, let me know. Good luck!

you have the basic drive and some family genes which are in your favor. musical talent runs in the family, so if your dad had it, chance are high that you have it as well. the fact that you like drumming and find yourself doing it spontaneously on various objects, is another sign. as long as you can pass the basic reflex complexity tests [patting head and circling tummy, then effortlessly switching between the two] then you are all set, and just need a decent teacher who is not an egomaniac. btw i always failed the reflex tests. but i can recognize budding talent in other people.

Used to. You'd be amazed how many people want to buy your drums when they hear them (Ludwig Accent, but hey, they were 'real' drums). I'm not sure how I was supposed to take that...;)
