This was the first I'd heard about this novel...what about the rest of you?

News to me. Horribly wrong though. The mercury thing was faked, and though there may not be much written records of it, there are valid theories as to its previous existence. Basically, and early human with autism could invent better weapons and shelter, for example. But their inability to communicate would likely preclude reproduction. The genes would be passed on via the human's close relatives, and might surface again in a few generations. One possible reason into the recent increase in cases is that there were never as many people alive at one time, and that nobody had noticed or quantified the syndrome. It was often diagnosed by the Freudian definition, schizophrenia, and treated with permanent institutionalization. Another possibility is that it is a result of present knowledge and technology - our civilization values those who invent and innovate, which is common among high-functioning Autistics. People with these traits are more likely to gather together for various reasons, and reproduce. It has been surmised that places such as Palo Alto are hotbeds of AS traits.
