I have a minor fascination with bands who change so much over the course of their career that they aren’t even recognizable anymore. Obviously, most bands evolve a lot through the years, and they may start to experiment with different styles, but I’m not talking about Metallica going from thrash metal to blues rock. I’m not even talking about Metallica doing a country song that one time (“Mama Said,” for those who don’t believe me or have repressed the memories). You could take two songs from any given band and convince someone that they’re not from the same people. What I mean is a band’s core identity changing THIS much:

The first video is Ministry in 1983, and the second video is Ministry in 1992.

Need another example? Here’s Pitchshifter in 1991 and again in 1998.

And I can’t leave out Sugar Ray. They changed this much in just a couple of years:

Post your favorites, if you know of any. Seriously, I wanna see more.

Ulver is the PERFECT example. Went from ultra grim Black Metal to.......experimental electronica ambient soundtrack......or something.

I wish Lacuna Coil stuck to their old doomy ways instead of that poppish stuff they put out now. Not a terribly drastic change I guess...but still *shrugs*

Silverchair used to be a really good alternative band, and now they went all Coldplay on us. And Daniel Johns looks like he works as a stripper at a gay bar now.

I would say Guns N' Roses, but the new band is not them! (spare Axl Rose)

Anyways, did The Beatles change drastically? The seemed to go from smart, mop-top lads to magic, long-haired bearded hippies :)

Sigur Rós was a metal and dark ambient band.

Now look at 'em.

I thought about including the Beatles, but I figured they remained in the same general pop category, but I won’t argue against their addition here.

I can’t believe I forgot to include the Beastie Boys.

Here they are from the early 1980s, when they were hardcore punk:

And here are they as we know them better:
