Here's just a curiosity question, what would you guys think of the idea of working together, swapping waves, joining up en force on some projects? Stuff like....say....you have a few guitarists with rigs that they can wav record their stuff into a computer who need a drummer and perhaps a few vocalists. Maybe an electronic musician or two who are looking for a vocalist or a band looking for someone who can finalize, mix-down, or master their stuff decently well.
I know we've got talent, that's not even a question, the question is - are we up for working together? Does it sound feasible or is it possibly a bit pie-in-the-sky? The way I see it we could have a lot of fun with this, heck, maybe even some commercial success.

That sounds...kind of awesome.
My abilities include composing/songwriting, electric and classical bass, piano, singing, and low brass (baritone and tuba, some trombone). I'm going to be studying woodwinds and more composition next semester, as well as working on my hand strength so I'm better at vibrato (x.x). I have experience using acid and pro tools as well.

Swapping files online is easy enough, obviously though we'd likely need to send stuff back and forth - no telling who has what plugins, which one's are free and which one's aren't.

I would be interested in this sort of stuff if anyone has a need for a banjo and/or guitarist. I have both a classical and steel string acoustic guitar. I also have a quality way of recording my instruments now. I'd love to hear someone singing properly over my guitar playing! ![]()

Anyone use soundcloud.com? I think it kind of helps take care of some of the file format stuff. We could start a Wrong Planet group. My username on there is FearOfMusic if anyone wants to be my friend.

There are hard drives that you can get online.
I've tried this once before, tried to get a bunch of people together for a trip hop project (I loved how it bends every genre together in deep ways and I felt that it could incorporate everyone and anyone who played an instrument). Last time it was Elephant Drive or something like that?
I've gotta go out of town for work for the rest of the week, though I'll still have access and be on here - we can give this some more thought. I wouldn't recommend soundcloud just because it has a set limit, gnaws up your tracks once you have them posted to mp3, and ideally we should settle on one of two sample rates across the board - 44.1 khz 16 bit or 44.1khz 24 bit. I'd avoid 48khz over the quantization errors you get when bumping from 48k down.

I might be up for possibly contributing to an electronic project of some sort, maybe. I've got a whole bunch of different soft-synths and I always seem to be coming up with new loops and other musical elements for songs. I write down lyrics from time to time, but I'm no vocalist, at least not right now. I am thinking about taking music theory and voice classes at the local community college, sometime, though.
My favorite genres, and thus biggest influences (in no particular order) are, with examples:
Nu Metal - Linkin Park
Alternative Rock - Three Doors Down
Alternative Metal - Nickelback
Post-Grunge - Theory of a Deadman
Pop Punk - Amber Pacific
Post-Hardcore - Escape The Fate
Melodic Hardcore - Rise Against
Industrial - VNV Nation
Industrial Rock - Marilyn Manson
Industrial Metal - Dope
Electronic Rock - Celldweller
Aggrotech - Combichrist

And that might be one good idea of many, ie. we could put loops out there for intergroup use, maybe our own named folders and this way when we work collabs we can give someone the heads up, figure out what kind of DAW they have, and pitch the stems back and forth in wav and perhaps demo in mp3?

That's what Fixt Remix does. The Fixt artists put the stems for their songs up on the website for download, and users can download them, use them, cut them, mix in their own, etc. for remixes. They of course have to agree to certain terms and conditions concerning copyright and usage first, but otherwise, they have free run of the stems that are put up there.
Looperman is a site that does something similar, where people can go to get royalty-free user-created loops and tracks and whatnot. A community Dropbox would probably be simpler and more efficient, though.

Would or could the samples be 'us' (WP) exclusive if entered the right way? I wonder just because I'd like us to keep our own energy, if you have particular loops you've been fond of that's fine but I suppose it would be best to keep things kinda clean.
That and, it would be worth seeing who wants to try projects out with who. We could try that angle, particularly as more people sign themselves up for the idea and give a bit of background on what they do. Obviously vocalists are going to be a pretty big commodity, accoustic musicians somewhat, electronic musicians - lol, we're a dime a dozen but then again that's in a good way - ie. we all have our own tastes, our own ideas, and I think it'll be easy for us to find people we intuitively can link with and bang out some solid tunes.

I think so. I might have a look around for free sites and services that would allow for selective user-access.
That would be a good place to start, for sure, so we know who's down for what role(s) and what genre(s) and sub-genre(s) they're interested in. How do you think we should go about that, though?

Lol, we could keep talking logistics till people stop holding up the wall and say they're in or out
I think the thing I'd say for myself immediately:
I could possibly help a lot of people, perhaps anyone who asked, in mixing capacity - I'd at least give it a go, I wouldn't say I'm quite a mastering engineer but my understandings of how to balance a track are getting there as well as how to get things to sit right in a mix, how to balance what things to round out the groove, bring it out more, etc.
Aside from that:
- genre-wise I have no desire to strap anyone I work with down to dnb, in fact I'd probably rather not do that directly. Although, I think a lot of my influence would still add that type mood or a trip-hop type element
- I'd like to try breaking up genres and just free-lancing it, that said I wouldn't want to sit too heavily in one genre or another, if someone gave me hip-hop I'd start bending it out, if someone gave me industrial I'd probably be tweeking it with rnb or jazz.
I don't have any particular 'who's lined up but, I'll definitely review any invite.
That's another thing though too, I think if anyone starts a project best to just do the ideas and suggestions online and, if a few people think they have something they can run with, perhaps even a tune pretty close to completed if they want to play it safe, they may want to wait till then to announce the project.
Not to take it too seriously, I think we could have a blast with this but, it'll make it that much more interesting as well if we put a lot into it and challenge it into semi-pro territory. Also, no rules against asking a third party in who knows a bit more. Ie., I know my creative limits - I can deliver a good melody but, change-ups and glitchwork isn't my strong suite, if someone else is more of a natural at making it evolve - I'd gladly pass it off to them, give them credit for their work, and have something that sails proper.

Yeah, my influences are all over the place, but I currently only have the equipment to do electronic genres. I can only draw on so much of my favorite genres when I don't have (or know how to play) physical instruments like an electric guitar or bass (that's a big hint to those who do). I'm a drummer in passing, and play a little mandolin, but I don't currently have any live recording capability, so that's pretty much out. I'm planning on getting a Blue Yeti USB microphone to try to remedy that, though (mostly to try to do my own vocals- I'm not particularly talented in that department).
You said you're pretty good with mixing and mastering? That's good, because I'm teaching myself, and my skill for it is only moderate, at best.
I'm with you on the whole 'not-being-tied-to-a-genre' thing. I have so many different directions I'd like to go, I'm not really sure where I'd like to start.
But for now, I'm currently working on a song similar to Fadeaway, Stay With Me (Unlikely) and other early Celldweller. One I'm currently calling 'Weight'.
