Does anyone have any tips on how to do research?

I am currently writing a Godzilla fanfic with my friend, and I see it as a high-tech action thriller with political, supernatural, and espionage elements. To that end, I want to add some credence; think Tom Clancy or a Metal Gear game. The problem is that when doing research on the Internet, I tend to get distracted and retreat into randomness until I realize that two hours have passed without me writing a single word.

Doe anyone have any suggestions on how to improve my concentration and still maintain the vibe that I want for the work? If so, I'd appreciate it.

You could create an outline with the elements you want to research. That way when you start to get distracted you could reference the outline to keep you focused.
