Do you listen to anything really obscure, something that maybe hasn't even hit the airwaves, but you think it's excellent and needs to be shared? If so, add it here! Even if it's not something SUPER indie, that's fine too. Just as long as it's not like, you know, Mumford and Sons or something like that (nothing against the band- it's just not, you know, a super-unknown).

Sometimes, when I feel as if I've exhausted my supply of good music, I like to post a thread like this on a forum like this, and see what comes up. I've discovered some great bands this way.

I'll start off with a couple to get the ball rolling: each band is a link -> Sui Generis (think Simon and Garfunkle, but Argentinian), Cyrille Aimee, Sa Ding Ding, a folk artist from inner Mongolia. (I'm studying a few different languages at the moment, so by now I've dug up a LOT of foreign-language music nobody in the US would have EVER heard of).

My favourite singer. Not super unknown but at least far from mainstream.

Hipsters think they listen to Indie Rock. They do not listen to Indie Rock, this so-called Indie Rock ought to be renamed Hipster Pop. Real Indie Rock has less than 100,000 views on Youtube.

Anyway, one really Indie Rock artist I like is Tarby, he does many genres, but mainly Industrial and Progressive Rock/Metal. Here are the teasers for his upcoming Industrial Metal album:

I'm bringing him up as he needs money. Donate here.

Most likely not, unless they happen to like bands like 5ive, (The band from Boston, not the sh***y English Boy band) Ufomammut, Vagtazo Halottkemek, Centepede, Terje Rypdahl, etc.

Here's a couple of my favorites.

Super-talented and super-obscure lol

A Renaissance viol composer who's hardly ever mentioned:

One of the best current blues musicians, he's hardly mentioned outside of the New Orleans area

Gatemouth is actually pretty influential in certain circles, but his name is often forgotten when the big names in blues come up (I got to meet him once, really nice guy! He made really good BBQ too lol).

I'd imagine my tastes in current music skew a bit toward obscurity just by virtue of my total dissatisfaction with the mainstream right now. I like music that I find thought-provoking, like progressive rock; a lot of what's popular now just completely confuses and alienates me. As a result, I would expect a few of the artists in my collection to be unknown to my friends.

A few years ago, I got a copy of Porcupine Tree's The Sky Moves Sideways for Christmas. I had specified that I wanted the 2-disc expanded version, which meant my parents had to order it from the UK. When it arrived, I was quite happy to find that it had been sent out with an extra disc, which was a promotional sampler of other artists affiliated with the record label, Kscope. From that single disc I've been introduced to so many artists whom I would have otherwise never heard. Anathema is one example, although they appear to not be all that obscure; I may be in the minority, but I'm a bigger fan of their newer work (past couple of albums) than their doom-metal "classics" from the 90s. Porcupine Tree members Steven Wilson and Richard Barbieri also had solo work and side projects represented; I was instantly attracted to Wilson's solo music. There was an Engineers song, too, although that was actually not the first time I'd heard their music; I was somewhat familiar with them already from their contribution to the remix version of Bloc Party's Silent Alarm.

One of the projects represented on the sampler was Lunatic Soul. This was my first encounter with any of Mariusz Duda's music, and shortly afterward I also became a big fan of Riverside.

Another artist on the sampler who I think bears mentioning was The Pineapple Thief. I'm only just starting to get deeper into their music now.

The majority of my peers don't know of the following (I'm American) :

Joy Division (Complex lyrics to describe how I feel)
The Sound (Simple lyrics to describe how I feel)
Gang of Four (Love the aggression + guitar)
Mark Knopfler (Love the laid-backness + guitar)
The Shins (even the hipsters I know don't know of them! 8O )
Morning Parade

Quite difficult since all my music is unknown and underground, but:

I've yet to come across anyone who's heard of these:

My tastes can get as diverse and (somewhat) obscurer than this at times.

Those are pretty damn good tracks IMO, but I doubt you would find people who are truly into that stuff.

I'm on the same boat with that issue.

I like pop music & country & rock from the 90s & 80s & 70s but I also like lots of comedy music & some groups that aren't really known about in America. There's waaay too many groups that come to mind for me to list here.

Very true.

I've only found people who are remotely interested in Squarepusher. :)

*Incoming Double Post*

With three more gems. Not sure if many folks have heard of Orbital as much, I know their hits like Chime are winners, but the one below is a better cracker of a tune!

Aquasky's "Bodyshock" double LP is something of a masterpiece, blasting the 2 disc set out of my headphones during adolescence and through to college. Good times.
