Yes, we all love to read stories. But the question is, "What kinds do you like to read?"

I favor mostly comedic stories. But periodically, I will want to read the occasional bittersweet love story; maybe it's because I've never had a GF and I want to feel better about it.......

I tend to like darkly comic literature or emotionally intence stories. T.C. Boyle, Peter Carey, Ian McEwan are writers I have enjoyed a lot recently.

Horror, mystery, fantasy, science fiction, and fact based stories.

Oh, and shorts that are a bit of a mind-fuck, like Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart. I love a good mind-fuck.

Haha! Yeah. Mind-f*ck is pretty self-explanatory on what I need. I treasure Kafkha´s novella, Metamorphosis like an adventurer will treasure his map. It helped me get through tough times and shifted my perspective on how to humanely treat someone suffering and nearing their death.

Reading stories that make me cry is also a favorite thing of mine, too.

Lately, I've been reading short horror fiction in magazines like Cemetery Dance (which I'd love to write for someday). I also absolutely love stuff by late greats like Robert E. Howard, and H.P. Lovecraft - both almost certainly Aspies.

I like reading stories that take place in a dystopian world.

1. Character-driven speculative works that trend toward the 'harder' end of the Science-Fiction spectrum.

2. A lack of graphic detail in regard to bodily functions, sex, and death.

3. A lack of "Deus Ex Machina" resolutions -- the protagonists must solve the problems themselves in a reasonable manner.

4. A lack of un-necessary "Whiz-Bang" gadgetry -- one or two gimmicks are fine, but let's not have them dominate the story.

5. A well-developed backstory that is revealed slowly, one piece at a time, and not in a single multi-page data dump.

6. Unexpected, yet believable plot twists.

Reading any sports stories, I might add, also works for me. But nothing too dramatic.

BEAT to a PULP: Superhero

Here's some good free/cheap reads for any kindle users...

Quote:
What makes a superhero? Someone with special powers ... Ordinary people doing good deeds ... Anyone with sophisticated technological gadgets and incredible agility? Superheroes can spring up from the most unexpected people in the most unusual places, and BEAT to a PULP: Superhero has gathered some of the best hardboiled and noir crime stories with a superhero bend. Billy Mitchell, the six-year-old "Red Avenger" in Kevin Burton Smith's tale, has an innocence and a special something that draws us to want to don a mask and tie a towel around our necks. Steve Weddle dissects the reality of a world in which super-powered "others" walk in the midst of normal people who tend to quote only parts of the Bible. And James Reasoner's story is set in a time not usually associated with superheroes -- the American Revolution -- yet Patrick Mainwaring finds the classic essence of a superhero. Other top contributors include Jake Hinkson, Garnett Elliott, Liam Jose, Sandra Seamans, Jerry Bloomfield, Thomas Pluck, Keith Rawson, Court Merrigan, Benoit Lelievre, and Chad Eagleton. If you like the work of Frank Miller or the recent Dark Knight films directed by Christopher Nolan, then you'll enjoy the grit of these thirteen tales in BEAT to a PULP: Superhero.

I like the story that starts with a "supercop" waking up in a seedy motel room with the severed head of the mayor of New York in a Walmart bag... 8)

PS

Blood & Tacos is another good cheap Pulp action series available on Kindle.

The Albino Wino kicks ass!

Ahhh...

I like the Uglies series (Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras). It's about a 16 year old girl named Tally... It's kinda hard to explain...
