I just wondering what everyone's opinions were on a band that's pretty much universally liked.

My list:

1. The Final Cut
2. Animals/Wish You Were Here (tied, I go back and forth on which I prefer)
4. Dark Side of the Moon
5. A Saucerrful Of Secrets
6. The Wall
7. Meddle
8. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
9. The Division Bell
10. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

Albums I haven't heard enough to properly judge:
Atom Heart Mother
More
Obscured By Clouds
Ummagumma Studio Disc

The list indicates an inclination towards Roger Waters and his darker moments.

I'm surprised The Final Cut rates so high on your list. I bought it when it first came out. Yeah, I tried, really tried, to live it. The only track I thought was passably okay was 'f**k All That.' The album sounds like it was written and produced quickly, not that they had anything new to say, but just to satisfy record company contract. My list

1. The Wall - absolutely flawless album from beginning to end. I've seen the movie several times (love the images of the boy smelling the rotten bottle of Molotov cocktail then pouring it out) and also demos of The Wall. Even one of my favourite videos is The Wall - Live in Berlin with The Scorpions, Brian Adams, Cyndi Lauper, etc.
2. Wish You Were Here - The first time I heard this I almost returned it. My friend said "why?" I told him the album was just one long into until it got to the title track. Since then I've studied and dissected the album, read the notes about its production, etc.
3. Dark Side of the Moon - Those clock alarms made me lose my cookies the first time I heard them come on. So loud!
4. Animals. I need to play this one more. I like it, just not that much.
5. The Division Bell
6. A Momentary Lapse of Reason - I think I liked the crazy album cover better than the album.
7. Ummagumma
8. Meddle
9. Piper At the Gates of Dawn
10. Atom Heart Mother - These last four were a bit too experimental for my tastes.

Animals apparently mentions Margaret Thatcher when Roger Waters says "Bus stop ratbag!"

It's not a popular album because it lacks pretty much all of Pink Floyd's tropes. There's no psychedelic moments, no synthesizer textures, no extended jamming, no lyrical or musical Syd callbacks, and very few guitar solos. There also aren't many traditional "pop hooks" (though the few there are used to great effect). It's not an easy album, and it doesn't try to sell itself as an easy album.

What it does have is some amazing sonic experimentation and use of the full dynamic range. It's an album that pretty much demands a pair of good headphones. It has some of Roger Waters most solid songwriting and lyrical penmanship, and the lack of the other tropes brings this aspect to the forefront. It also has some wonderful orchestration from the musical genius Michael Kamen.

But it isn't a "Roger Waters solo album" like many historians claim. It's a fitting and natural conclusion to the Pink Floyd legacy. Waters actually went in a completely different direction for his solo work, and while I'm fond of some of those albums, none of it really compares. There are very few albums like The Final Cut, which is kind of a shame, but this also adds to it's beauty. All of Pink Floyd's albums were ambitious, but The Final Cut succeeds at being a true work of art.

Yay Pink floyd special interest.

I have not really listening to all the albums. But like I think.

1 wish you were here the best - Just so sad and powerful (you know it's a about syd barret don't you?)

2 Piper at the gates of dawn - It great listening to Syd before he had his metal break down, like the scarecrow song. But love how he kind of did joke music like "the gnome".

3 Saucer full of secrets

I more like the early music I think,

Syd Barrets music is just so different to the rest of the band. It's a shame he couldn't blend in because he would have given pink floyd a bit more bite to it.

Also Syd Barret may have been on the autistic spectrum.

I need to listen to some more..

A lot of people like the later David Gilmour era from DSOTM onwards stuff, but I prefer the Syd Barrett/ pre-DSOTM stuff better.

1. Piper at The Gates Of Dawn
2. Saucer Full of Secrets
3. Umma Gumma (proving that the band can pull off live what they do in the studio) --Also the later style sound is present, albeit rawer and edgier in 'Careful With That Axe Eugene'.
4. Meddle (If only for 'Echoes' and 'One Of These Days')

1. The Pulse: An awesome live album! Dave Gilmour's guitar has never sounded better and the Comfortably Numb solo on this album is just sublime. The Dark Side of the Moon disk is great too, Time and Great Gig in the Sky sound even better than the originals.

2. Wish You Were Here: As perfect an album as they ever made!

3. Animals: As above

4. The Wall: So many great tunes, although admittedly a few duff ones too.

5. Amused to Death: Easily the best solo Floyd album
