Very structurally complex music

I wonder if the love of very complex music is an aspie thing?

I am into avant garde/extreme metal, of the type most people hate and do not understand (examples: Darkspace, Mirrothrone, Altar of Plagues, Leviathan, etc; 'just noise' to the majority). Personally, I love tracking all of the various elements, particularly the fiendishly fast and continually shifting drumming patterns, and how they merge with basslines and how other instruments layer on top, sometimes merging with the lower levels and sometimes striking out on their own with structures that do not necessarily overtly fit the patterns they are layered upon. I have no musical training so I do not have the words to describe what I feel, but quite simply it is a sublime experience. I think it is fair to say that I am obsessive about this type of music as a result.

Anyone else feel this way about their music?

I don't know that most of what I listen to is necessarily very complex...I do love all forms of metal, and some bands I listen to certianly seem to have lots of complexities, but I really like the traditional heavy metal otherwise known as Doom Metal essentially, then a lot of that is mixed with like death or black metal Doom Metal and its sub-genres is probably my favorite when it comes to metal. Aside from that I really like psychedelic rock/music(not all psychedelic music is rock)...I really like how trippy it sounds and find some of the sound going on intresting. Then of course I like some punk, goth rock, post punk, psychobilly of course those genres are rather simple, but I do not think music quality is really based on complexity per say, based on if it sounds good and means something.

But I do like to listen to music, pick up on the different layers to it and what not.

I enjoy a lot of metal & industrial, I also believe a number of mellower genres often reach the same levels of intricacy. IMO, a lot of hip hop, electronica, ambient, reggae and derivative compositions can be perceptually similar; it's not necessarily a function of what can fit into each measure.

I don't know what it's called, but when there are overlapping lyrics, some sung by one chorus while other sung by another chorus simultaneously, how can people simultaneously hear and comprehend both sets without any trouble?

I havent heard much doom metal but I like Burzum.

OP, have you listened to Converge? They might suit your tastes for 'complex' music.

I obsess over many genres, but the only one I keep up to date with to the very week is progressive rock, which is inherently "complex". I remember first hearing Yes at a time when I was mostly listening to punk rock and was absolutely blown away by the artful and experimental textures and song structures. Most prog to me is true art which extends so far beyond what most typical 4/4 rock music has to offer. However, melody is still a very important thing for me, and I greatly prefer bands who craft complex songs instead of just pretentious noodling. Stuff like free jazz doesn't appeal to me in the least. I need structure.
