In their album "The Who Sell Out" the Who spoofed radio by placing delightfully awful fake ads and jingles between each song. Someone on UTube excerpted those parts and stuck them together.

More true now than when Petty released this. Today's DJ's are either snarky or only allowed to have a minimalist boring presence. Often it is one person voice tracking several stations on a network. Artificial Intelligence is going to replace the remaining DJs.

I paid no attention at all to music until I was about 18. Then I started listening to Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley on Radio 1 between 10pm and midnight in the late 90s. Then I got it. Those guys opened my ears. Tracks I particularly associate with that era:

^^never seen the video for that before. Has Tilda Swinton in it, weirdly.

I would like to bring to your attention what is going on rewoundradio.com this holiday weekend. They are playing 1960s and 1970s airchecks from New York's Top 40 radio station WABC. They are playing them pretty much just the way they aired originally. The DJs, the commercials(beware there were a lot of them), the jingles, the songs, and even some newscasts. It was very different than how music stations are programmed today. It is probably as close as one can get in 2023 to the experience of listening to music radio back then. If you are not a boomer you will find out what your boomer relatives are always yammering on about.
