I love the cure. "Fire in Cairo", "A Forest" and "Let's go to bed" are my favorite songs.

Robert Smith had a very interesting guitar tone. What made it distinct was the combination of both chorus and flanger effects. He was trying to replicate the univibe effect used by Jimi Hendrix on his sound. Robert Smith's tone doesn't really sound like the univibe but it still sounds cool.

I'm really picky about them. There are like 5 songs I totally love. The rest? Don't care for.

"Want" is one of my most favorite songs ever; "Burn" comes close; "Lost" kicks arse; "Lullaby" is fun; and "Underneath the Stars" from their recent 2008 album is good stuff.

Apart from that I don't like them much.

You might like Snake River Conspiracy's cover of Lovesong. 8)

was it Staring at the Sea? That's one of the few Greatest Hits collections that are completely essential purchases. I mean, that record, the Violent Femmes self-titled album and Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief" were basically my soundtrack to my sophomore year in high school.

I'm a huge fan of their earlier work (Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography are particularly excellent), like their stuff up until and including Wish (love Disintegration), but everything since then has been meh at best. I didn't even bother getting their new album. Their early post-punk albums are just magnificent though.

Very good stuff from the 1980s.

:D

One of their songs that stands out for me is Why Can't I Be You, also Close To Me and Just Like Heaven.
