It seems to me that on these forums there is always somebody posting saying they want a girlfriend/boyfriend? Why is this? What do people think a Girlfriend/Boyfriend will bring to their life? Why do people want them?

We want to be loved because we're human beeings, with the same basic needs as NT human beeings.. Most aspies don't want to be lonely, we just don't understand how to interact "good enough" with other people. Off course we need some time alone, but so does even the most social NTs.

Theres all sorts of reasons for all kinds of different people, ranging from sex, companionship, fear of isolation, validation of self worth, entertainment, decrease in financial responsibility, stability, emotional feedback, or even just someone to share interests with.

Not to mention the idea you aren't complete without a special someone is firmly ingrained into almost every culture.

It's probably a slightly cyclic process: Modern society tells us to want an intimate relationship with another. They tell us this in song lyrics, in poetry, in fairy tales, on TV, etc.. It's almost mandatory that movies now days have a love story worked into them. Because practically every hero gets the girl in the end, it suggests that falling in love is a requirement for being a hero. That's why The Great Mouse Detective is my favorite Disney movie: because Basil is a social misfit who doesn't fall in love, but who KICKS ASS anyway! :P

All these messages try to persuade us that intimacy is worth pursuing, but it also convinces some people that everyone wants intimacy. When these people see others who are single, they assume that these singles must be unable to fulfill their own needs. The result is that a lot of people tend to measure your success by whether or not you have an intimate relationship with someone. It becomes a status symbol.

I've fallen in love twice: the kind of dreamy love where you lie awake late at night and think about her. Both times I was unable to persuade the girl to be with me (even just for a date) :( . I'd like to feel that dreamy gooey feeling inside again (and succeed in winning whoever that feeling is attributed to), because I know what it feels like, but I just haven't felt that way since, so I haven't pursued anyone.

Maybe you're kidding, but this is my honest impression of the types who are desperate to have "a girlfriend", period, as opposed to being attracted to a particular individual.

I've noticed over time that I'm actually only interested in sex, so I stay even more away from women.

yes, that's true of some people (not that I don't want sex, but what I really want is more than sex).
