Freedom of speech is about the closest thing that americans are collectively proud of......

and even though I know hyperlexian allready said Canada isn't all that great. After working with someone who was in their Foster care system for most of his life. I'd point out that their adoption and foster care system is one of the worst in the world.

^^^yes, it is terrible.

Not to mention blues, jazz, rock n roll, metal, etc. The American contribution to modern music really can't be overstated. It's amazing.

As far as adoption/foster care, yes, we have a big black mark there, Children's Aid here is renowned for losing its wards altogether. Sometimes they turn up dead. Many of the rest are just ruined as adults. Just so happens that I was getting a lift home not 10 minutes ago, and we were passing three brand new city buildings they are putting up, Public Works, police station, and Children's Services, and we remarked that Children's Services was by far the largest, which is telling. The public treats kids in trouble horribly here, we have bad problems in that respect.

I had never thought anything about whether somebody was called or called herself a lady before. I really just don't think it matters. My mental picture of a lady without context is an old woman who is easily offended.

I had to take ettiquette classes when I was 13 and the teacher said no thongs and the next class this girl leans over to me and is like "those girls are going to get into trouble they are wearing thongs" I look at the two girls and back then whisper "how do you know what type of underwear they are wearing??" Then I proceeded to ask the teacher and well she was appalled and never thought I would make a "true lady". pffft whatevs.


I think a lady in modern day would be a woman who knows how to act and dress appropriately for whatever social enviroment they are going to be in.

I don't mind being called a lady, because at least they acknowledge that I am an adult. Many people think that I am a teenager, or do not treat me with the same level of respect as another adult.

I would get offended if anyone used the word in a negative connotation, though.

Eh, well the image I get when I hear the word 'lady' is that of a yamato nadeshiko, this is used to refer to noble, high-society Japanese women as well as the style and mannerisms that are used to refer to them. They are elegance, beauty, and grace incarnate... but they are by no means weak. You see, in the Edo period, the noble ladies of the household were usually tasked with maintaining order within their lands while their husbands were off to war, just like in the Western feudal period. As a result, they were skilled in the use of weaponry and lethal when threatened. Many Japanese weapons gained fame because of their association with yamato nadeshiko, such as the naginata (a polearm with a blade designed for slashing rather than stabbing/piercing, wielded much like a quarterstaff, used to compensate for the height and strength differences when faced with a male opponent) and the senbon (sharpened needles used as hairpins, a woman could tie these into her hair, then remove them and use them as a close-ranged stabbing weapon to defend her honor).

Anyways, my girlfriend Kyuuchan likes traditional Japanese clothing and weapons, so I'll use the word yamato nadeshiko sometimes when she's walking around her dorm/house in a yukata. It's more of a joke than anything, because Kyuuchan grew up on a farm in Wyoming and is about the furthest from yamato nadeshiko personality-wise as one can get... but I still thinks she looks the part, especially because she looks like a goddess in a kimono. Of course she also fits the lethality requirement as well, as there's no telling what manner of sharp objects she has hidden in various places around her person. The point of the matter is, if any guy lays a finger on her without her consent they're liable to lose said finger as well as a few other appendages and quite a lot of blood (think I'm kidding? When she was working on the farm, one of her jobs was to castrate pigs. I s**t you not). Thankfully, she knows that I am a gentle person and would never do anything to her without her consent, she knows that if she gets uncomfortable all she has to say is stop and I'll stop, making her senbon needles quite unnecessary. Then again I respect her out of love for her and not fear of what she most probably could and would do to me with her senbon no shini (lit. "hair-pins of death") should I cross the line.

I particularly liked all your fuss about Canada. A comment was made about Canada, which i also thought was stupid, and i attempted to make fun of it by saying that i must just not understand Canadians. (Of course, I was too subtle, so my comment was taken at face value and it was explained to me that, in fact, my assumption does not apply to every Canadian. Gosh. You think? ) I find that it's ever so hard to tell people that you think they are incredibly stupid in a polite, non-confrontational way. So I do SO appreciate it when other people try. Even though it's futile, I like the hope inside the hopelessness of it.

My fuss is not about canada. Its about saying positive generalizations for the sake of apearing better than another group. I dont think anything bad about canada, just found that a statement like all canadians are polite was BS considering saying all men/women are polite would bring a shitstorm in this forum by both sides.

so your argument for misrepresenting me is that it's ok because other people have been misrepresented? interesting idea, but it doesn't really work.
