A word of caution; nothing is less witty than trying to be witty. Not fair, but true.
So true. I tried as hard as I could over a long period and to my frustration I was unable to make anyone laugh so I gave up.
A year after giving up trying to be funny I started going to a new school. One of my early days there a random girl approached me and I had no clue what to say to her so I said the first random thing that popped into my mind and she loved it. From then on whenever I´m meeting new people I try to come across as funny(not too friendly to everyone because many people take advantage of over friendliness but funny ) most of the times I succed.
It´s probably got to do with how confident you are with those who are about to hear the joke and yourself. Last year I was with my best friend and I some sort of joke that related chewing gum and energetic diet bars, she loved it . A few days after she was with some of her friends I barely knew(she was a girl and so were her friends and I tried to hang out with guys whenever it was possible) I did the exact same joke but I was so worried about how I was coming across to her friends that I ended up coming across as a weirdo. I guess it also has to do with luck.
