They should be prepared and willing to act as facilitator if necessary.
Example: If he abandons you in social situations, or puts you on the spot in front of people,
and then later blasts you for melting down or doing or saying something weird, it's a very bad sign.
You're not a child and he's not your parent,
but it's still his job to realize when you're truly overwhelmed, and to act accordingly.
