Sometimes it's not just about saying it towards yourself but it's about expressing kindness and compassion towards your inner self and building positive self talk, that's not easy for someone who has an negative or cynical mindset and it can definitely take time. I think self acceptance and understanding is the way forward though but it is definitely something that takes time.
I'd think that's the best way to look at it. A lot of people on this thread have mentioned it as being something they were told to say once a day - I'm not sure if that's the best way about it. I'll say it to myself as needed. Sometimes it won't happen more than ten times, some days it may come close to not happening at all, another day when I'm deliberately manipulating my inner state in either moving forward or trying to make sure negative emotions aren't requitted, it could be between five hundred or one thousand times as I might say it a bit like a mantra.
What really fascinates me though is that we aren't our outside circimstances, that we can generate our own reality internally to where we completely realign our own energies and in doing so we can change the outside world or at least to the extent of its tendencies toward us. Its a long-haul process of course, people need to realize that they need patience and dedication - ie. meaning that they can't find a good reason not to throw themselves at it.

LOL! I would never say something like that to myself. That sounds too silly; I'll say it to people I love, however.
You're also 20 - I don't think I would have been caught dead back then saying things like this. I don't know where in Ohio you're from, I grew up near Cleveland I can attest that conformity and cool were still very much enforced the way Torquemada enforced Catholicism when I was that age. Being caught 'uncool' often meant bamboo under the fingernails. The good news - you gain some license in this area as you get older!

It isn't that it's "uncool"; I just don't see a purpose for it is all.
