I'm sort of the reverse of this - I'm a girl who prefers the friendship of men, especially gay ones. They're more fun to talk to IMO than women, although one of my best friends is a lesbian. For some reason most straight gjrls I've known were vapid and self-centered, if not just plain weird. I'm less self-conscious around the people I listed because I know they probably wont sh** talk me behind my back and think I'm cool for who I am.

Wouldn't say you're the opposite. Actually, the same. You, too, have an easier time interacting with the opposite gender. I think this is true for many people with rough/unusual backgrounds, which includes having Asperger's.
Been there, done that. Weird thing happens: I become friends with a girl, and they fall for me. I like a girl, bet's off. I have friends of both sexes, but I've either friend-zoned them or they've done likewise to me. I think dating for me might be easier if a) I forget about liking a girl until I know her, b) know that there are some girls I just won't ever go out with because of the different worlds syndrome and c) try a new idea: pretend to be sure or not if I like a girl, have a mutual good friendship and if I do like said girl, hope for the best.
Then again, my tastes in the opposite sex are problematically stereotypical.
