I never had a close relationship with my parents & am kind of private with them so I never went to them for relationship advice & never really told them alot about my relationships. As for the example their relationship set; they do love each other but my dad probably has Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder so he's kind of controling & contradicts my mom. She goes along with his decisions & doesn't want to disagree because she'll get told how she's wrong. My dad does things around the house when he wants & is also kind of dependent on her to take care of certain things & he worries about what she's doing & hovers around her sometimes. They never really fight but they have communication problems. My dad suggest doing things & says it's because mom will like it but she really not that interested but she goes along for him. He may just really want to do those things for him & deluded himself into believing it's for her.

My mom told me not to ruin my life by "getting trapped." This was coming from someone who found herself an unwed teen mother and was pressured into marrying her 18 year-old high school drop-out boyfriend, who the made her very unhappy for the next 20 years or so until he eventually drank himself to death. While I was growing up, she seemed to be constantly thinking about all the things she believed she missed out on in life and letting my brother and I know how different her life would have been if she hadn't had us. I'm still single and childless at 30, so I guess maybe it worked.

Yes, especially mom my has given me some advice.

I observed my parents off course who were two amazing parents in a very loving marriage.

Mom meant well, but had no idea how rough things were for me socially. Dad thought that five dollars was more then enough money for two 14-year olds to go on a date (c.1970), and that any more than that meant that the kids were likely gambling, getting drunk or taking drugs.

They gave me a great example of what not to do in a relationship. :roll:

The best advice my dad gave me was not to let a guy take me for granted. Make sure the guy knows how lucky he is to have such a pretty gf.

The best advice from my mom was that before I agree to marry a guy look at his worst traits, magnify them (since that is what happens over time), and ask myself if I could live w/ it for the rest of my life.
