Historically, weren't colognes main used to cover the body odor or people who had not bathed recently?

Very important.

It pays not to smell of grease, dandruff, BO, poo breath and crotch if you want to attract women.

The same applies to women wanting to attract men.

It is sufficient to simply just not smell bad. It is usually not necessary for a man to use more than soap, water, and deoderant. If you do use a cologne or aftershave, use only small amounts. It is worth noting, however, that this could obscure your natural scent which contains phermones which women might possibly be sensitive to in a way which benefits you.
