I get it. It's coming off bitter, but it's more of a cautionary tale. Also, oftentimes, control is presented under the guise of "love", "caring", and "compromise". Some people can see through it, some can't. That's how it was done in my family when I was growing up. In other words, I was always the one "compromising", because my family "cared about me".

Nah! Monk means church, and I don't think they'll allow an atheist like me to join their ranks. Plus, it's not a lifestyle I can handle.

It’s never a good idea to make sweeping generalizations.

Thing is, his friends are also guilty because they act like blue pill simps who put up with any kind of BS their girlfriends give them instead of putting them to their place.

How should these women be put in their place?

How do we know they’re actually giving their boyfriends BS?

I think it’s important to find the right person and not be desperate enough to just choose the first girl that comes along.

That sucks. However, don’t believe everything you feel. Feelings aren’t facts.

He said that these girls give his friends orders and they have to follow them like children with their parents. If it is so then his friends should have put these girls to their place obviously, if they don't like being ordered around.

"Giving their boyfriends BS" would be going too far. But my friends abandoned their previous pleasures very quickly and very abruptly. Also, the girlfriends are far more introverted and homebody-ish than my friends ever were, and my friends just went along with it. When I asked them why they won't stand their ground, their only explanation was: "It's how a relationship is supposed to be." :? Well, if that's indeed true, I'm staying single for the rest of my life.

It's just that your friends are weak and/or submissive, I don't think relationships necessarily have to be like that.

It sounds like they enjoy their current relationships more than “previous pleasures.” It sounds like it’s more upsetting that the friends have grown and changed than that the girls are bossing the men around.

Grown? I'd rather die than live that that.

No, it isn't. A relationship is supposed to be mutual respect and understanding, not one party making the rules and the other abiding by them. That's bordering on an unhealthy relationship if you ask me.

My parents have the sort of relationship I can only admire. In fact, their relationship is the sort I find ideal for myself. It's not my mother making rules for my father to follow - it's them both working together and compromising if necessary. If my father wants to have a night out with the dudes, my mother lets him do that. And you know what? They're still happily married 27 years later.

I pity anyone who enters a relationship thinking you can't and shouldn't compromise in one, no matter how madly in love you are with the other person.

Oh some relationships suck. Surely we all know people in unbalanced relationships and know what to avoid by observing others.

However, I know people in good relationships and they work as a team and respect each other. They're nice people to be around.

Back to the OP. Yes there are many fulfilling relationships in life... However , there is also the intimate and sexual side of life that none of those can fill. It is different and there really is no alternative to that. I am not going to hug a friend or relative like I hug a lover. It would be wildly inappropriate. And that shows how different it is. It feels different too. Friends never make me feel giddy and no friend or relative will look at me with come hither eyes. It's very different.

Here’s the good news: You don’t have to!

You are suggesting a problem when there isn’t one. Every woman is different. Every man is different. Every relationship is different.

Well I don't know his friends, but I know people who get ordered around and put up with that BS (my brother, and no being like that doesn't mean that you are grown). I had the impression that his friends are like that too.
Point is, I was telling him that a relationship doesn't have to be like that, especially if you have a spine and make things clear from the start.

Yes. I would rather someone was straight with me about what they wanted. I'd hate for someone to be playing along with me and what I like, but be secretly unhappy :( even if it turned out we weren't compatible and had to part ways, I'd rather that than live a lie.

My married friends are always wary of their wives when we hang out, and they don't hide it- like if it gets bit late they are 'Uh oh my wife would be mad'. Wives bossing their men around is a verryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy common scenario .....too common to the extent that it feels like a social NORM ; even my mother keeps bossing my father around.

Sure, and in that case you could even be friends perhaps if you still are on good terms.
