Right, and to be fair, there is also the dopey guy TV trope, who is typically the fat sort of dumb dude with the wife who is much smarter than he is, and every laugh is about how dumb and fat he is. It's boring and unfunny and unimaginative. Basically why I have stopped watching most TV and most movies, because it's like it's written by 18 year olds.

That's because these shows, along with so much other entertainment that comes out of Hollywood, is written by men. It's no wonder there are absolutely horrible representations of women in just about every movie and TV show, although admittedly it's better than it used to be.

Are you implying that the show is enlightened as far as men are concerned? You must have a pretty low opinion of us.

I'd hang with Rose. The only reason she stalks Charlie is because they had sex. As a platonic friend, she'd be awesome. Unlike most women on the show, she treats Alan with genuine respect, and she's good with Jake too.


Rose is very loyal to the Harper boys. She is one of my favorite female characters on the show besides Berta.

He can seem a little wimpy at times----but I think he would actually be strong in an emergency (Alan, that is).

True. He’s at least got a work ethic and is much more responsible.

But he’a not really a very nice guy. His negativity and hostility towards his son’s mother and his ex-wife. Not good. Given the opportunity, he’d regard women no differently than Charlie.

It’s emblematic of a dilemma men often face: reconciling using women with taking a moral higher ground. Not all women want a relationship. Women do use men’s desire to possess them to get what women want. Men in this world are just as disposable as the women they believe they possess. Alan easily gets trapped because he attracts (and falls for) women with an agenda. Unless he can fix that, he is not cut out for marriage.

Is he? After he won a ton of money it just went puff in a matter of episodes. Also his brother has taken care of him for the whole series.
