What I had in my 20's was actually way more obnoxious. It was especially bad at college and working in restaurants where a new girl would like me every month and hate me two weeks later. It's not even that I couldn't read signs of interest, it's more like I was not their type, I knew it, my 'look' apparently matched an archetype, I wasn't that archetype, and whenever I tried to chat them up and converse on whatever level I could try straightening the situation into they didn't like it - ie. I wasn't allowed to be 'me', I was supposed to be whatever I looked like to them.
After maybe ten or fifteen years of that, from highschool to my late 20's, I found out that either this had done damage or that that my attraction to most women was that touchy that I was stuck between on one side needing someone who was enough on the same page to understand me but then either almost never finding anyone who was that which I was attracted to, or finding people I was attracted to where there were serious enough inconsistencies in our personalities, and the rare time where I felt like I was looking in the mirror and should have gotten married - the best example, she was a recovering alcoholic and I lived in a party house!
It's like trying to play Texas hold em with friends, losing all the money you through on the table, and you realize as the game goes on that it's not that you're not playing your hands well, the runs keep getting dropped and none of your cards match, like beyond what you'd think statistical chance would yield. At least in hold em you can bluff if you want to but wow... dating and even worse, marriage? Any of that has long term consequences that you're not getting out of unscathed.
At this point at least I'm finally not getting screwed on career but.... I understand a different layer of this as well - status is attractiveness and if you've had a hard run of things that's about the same as poor status. While it's true that I don't think female-kind is necessarily a brick of sodium (although I do have times where it seems like much of humanity is exactly that predictable) I see where the thresholds are set to very few people's benefit on either side of the binary and it increasingly gets surprising, as perfectionistic as so many people seem to be, what anyone sees in anyone. Being human's a truly bizarre experience and it just amazes me to see that so many guys and girls, without ASD even, would rather look for the supermodel or pro athlete until they're in the grave. Looks like the best way to thin the herd is give us as much freedom as we want and we'll, almost without fail, get too disagreeable to even have friends anymore let alone romantic partners!
