yes, that's true of some people (not that I don't want sex, but what I really want is more than sex).

To me it's all about the sex...

It seems to me that on these forums there is always somebody posting saying they want a girlfriend/boyfriend? Why is this? What do people think a Girlfriend/Boyfriend will bring to their life? Why do people want them?

I don't know. To make them look & sound cooler?
Just an idea.

Ah! I'd forgotten about that part of the equation. You're quite right... I think that's often another reason behind the generalized "I want a girlfriend!" lament.

I think this thread needs its own theme song. :P

Well, there could be several reasons. Of course some may be in it for sex, but maybe they just like the girl and want to be around her. Sometimes it could be peer pressure. I'm currently single(I do have a crush on someone now) but sometimes I feel pressured by classmates to go ask out a girl. I just ignore it, but that's hard for some other people, of course.

Maybe you're kidding, but this is my honest impression of the types who are desperate to have "a girlfriend", period, as opposed to being attracted to a particular individual.

Are you using 'girlfriend' in the extremely casual social sense? Or in actually having a relationship...

I desire and want a quality relationship with a girl, I don't think it's desperation... but it's something I desire more than most things.

And that's your impression of me... eh. :?

(nah just joking... :D )

You can blame at least part of it on hormones.

Several times now you've brought up the same issues with my posts that bothered -me- when I hit "submit". :)

I guess I draw a distinction between people who just want "a girlfriend" as in "any (HOT) girl who will have me" and guys who long to have a real relationship and are holding out for that to come along. The latter seems a nobler goal. The former seems more like an effort at self-glorification.

self glorification is probably acceptable behaviour for those who seek it, Gwenevyn. Frankly I am charmed by a man that is not interested in self glorification, but other's mileage may vary with what they will put up with once they have found the boyfriend/girlfriend of their supposed dreams.

And simply because another person shows up and gets through to you does not mean they are instantly your soul mate and when you endue them with every virtue of behaviour you would want in a mate you do yourself and them a disservice. Imagine their surprise when you react so strangely when they go ahead with their lives because they sorta figured out you were kinda odder than most odd people and besides, what ever attracted them to you is far more attractive in that other guy/gal, too. The guy or girl is not the aim, the 'relationship' is.

This fetish, (in this case the 'relationship') once attained, is not put down easily should the lack of communication between you get too much to handle and finally you do have to part. The idea of 'the girlfriend/boyfriend' is stronger than the person you try to staple to the ideal. (I myself have been known to obsess over past relationships for years. . drawing every ounce of angst and adrenaline from the big egg I laid because I was so far out of my League. ~sigh~)

but love is a drug and many, many times you might need to score.

you get points for honesty! people have this reciprocity thing going on, where they give what they want to get. It's like mutual grooming you might have seen in primates on the Discovery channel?
so if you get someone that is really into you and into being all codependent putting your needs before her/his you have to look at that and know it is not a healthy relationship either, but it might work for you.
