I suppose you could try the "In-Depth Adult Life" forum ( http://www.wrongplanet.net/forum32.html ) I have to agree that most of the discussion in the Love & Dating forum isn't too helpful. But the thing you have to remember about AS is that it's often a social handicap, and people afflicted with it don't mature as quickly in some areas as others.

I wish I was popular enough to warrant a flame thread ...

Guess I'm just not controversial ...

If you're looking for an "AS focus", then unless men are specifically excluded then you're bound to find a certain demographic of young men. Actually most of the adult men on WP are taken or have relationship experience, it's just that in Love and Dating there is a predominance of single frustrated men, some of which have been particularly aggressive. There is a "Women's Discussion" forum on WP which I'm sure you've seen already, but there's a policy that if you specify in the title of a thread you make that the topic is female-only then any posts by male WP members in that thread would be deleted. At least that's as far as I'm aware and the stickied thread at the top says, given that for obvious reasons I don't go there very often.

If you're looking for some sort of camaraderie that automatically comes with AS, then you're bound to be disappointed. A lot of people look for this, they come on and assume that there will be many people who think the same way that they do. I wouldn't be surprised if most people on WP feel like they don't really fit in, even the regular posters or those who fit the demographic of young single men. I have over 1000 posts here and I still don't think I fit in properly, most of my posts feel like shouting at a brick wall and I don't have this experience on every forum I post on. I do continue to post, though, because many of the issues I can discuss I don't get to discuss anywhere else.

Also, if you're looking for "theories" and "research" with a sound scientific basis then I can't imagine that public internet forums are good places to look.

Thank you for your responses, I'm sorry I'm cranky. I had only a few moments.... I have to go now and will check back later.

I'm just looking for forums that are more suited for me. I'm not trying to start a flame thread or trolling or anything.

TU.

I wouldn't call it "popular"! LOL. Thanks anyways.

I'm rather keen to your interests as well ephemerella. I'm not sure how much information is available that relates to adults with AS and their interpersonal relationship problems, as most information that I've been able to find seems to be focused on children and young adults. However, I would be happy to take part in some intelligent discourse if you were to post some topics on the boards here (forgive me if you've done such and no one replied, I just registered today).

I for one hope that you will continue to post here, because your posts are very helpful, mature, and give a great alternative POV that a lot of people here need. I find your comments insightful, and when skimming a thread, I make an extra effort to read yours because of the intelligence they display.

If you bug Alex enough, I'm sure he might give us an extra 'academia' forum, with some extra-stringent rules to deal with 'immaturity'. Basically, sit there discussing theoretical stuff all day, of the nature it seems you're looking for. It would work well I think, if it could get off the ground.

Wouldn't want to throw in age barriers though. Just make it seem intimidating enough to chase off the pre-teen mindsets, or bore them into leaving, one or the other. :P

Usually, with forums like this, best to look into expansion, rather than leaving. Would be nice to have a more intellectual forum here I think. Most of it seems to be by those who haven't quite yet adapted to their AS, which really pulls down and stereotypes the entire forum, chasing off those of us who HAVE adapted.

The thing that gets me about this forum, aside from the immaturity and sexism, is that people keep coming up with reasons as to why we're "unqualified" to have relationships... a fundamental aspect of human existence.

Instead of 'adult' areas maybe a 'Mature' area or a 'Mature Intellectual' area. I doubt that a title is important. As one of the old people here it does seem at times as if the threads are dominated with a much younger viewpoint of the topic in question. That's okay as I enjoy reading almost everything but I can understand why somebody might prefer to talk about many of these subjects at a very deep level, not just glancing along the surface.
In the absence of such as separate catagory maybe some of us should start some 'deeper' types of threads. I'm not bright enough to think of anything specific myself unless somebody wants to talk about quantum theory of the brain which I doubt so I have it to leave it for others.

Actually, I'd be quite interested in such a discussion. There's been some research into pigeons and magnetic fields that has to do with QED and finding magnetic north, though I've not heard much in the field of "quantum neurology".

I'd be very interested in seeing the studies about magnetics since I have a theory that some of us also share some characteristics with respect to general navigation and direction finding in our environment.

When I came to these forums, I initially knew I was entering what is essentially a group of varied support forums, not intellectual discussions. I've thrown some in for good measure, just to see how it would be taken, as well as to amuse myself, but I never approached WP assuming there was anything more to garner from it than simple discussion and support in a few areas.

Intellectual forums of any sort seem hard to come by anywhere on the internet, but there are specialty groups on Yahoo and the like which have been created for interests like you're after. You could even create one yourself and advertise it here, to grab anyone else who's interested.

ephemerella:

It sounds like you want to talk with people who have depth. People of such are few and far between, culture - either AS or NT I think - is actually rather anti-depth in its attitudes. There's really no escape hatch, rather this is just the kind of world we live in.

I'd just say try to sort the wheat from the chaff, find people worth talking to, and do your best to ignore the grown kids if it seems like they're a waste of braincells.

just be stating my opinion that a "should we view girls as sex objects" thread in General Discussion, that was started by a disruptive person, was sexist and I was disappointed it wasn't locked along with the other threads the person had started.

Actually I'm kind of let down that I missed that thread as I have a rather specific stand on this, perhaps even from the opposing camp.

Here are a couple of relationships-related articles I found while on my "break" from "work" yesterday:

DIscuss.

Bonus points: Here are some short essay prompts to begin the final:
  • Why do risk-taking and out-and-out antisocial behavior increase popularity in adolescents and young adults?
  • Should a man emphasize aspects of prestige to impress a woman? Why or why not? Please make frequent references to the cited material.
  • You are trapped on a deserted island with only a volleyball to keep you company. From the volleyball's point of view, do you have high dominance, high prestige, or are you just crazy and screwed?
  • You have chosen to steal the volleyball's lunch money and meet it "at the flagpole" after recess. If there were women on the island, would they be attracted to your display of virility? Why or why not? Feel free to cite examples from the movie Castaway to back your hypothesis.

Dear ephemerella,

I agree that the "adult" area is a misnomer, it is anything but adult as it is full of XXX sex threads. But all is not lost, I will admit that some of the people here have the teenaged male outlook on life but that does not mean we all have that point of view.

I think that people like KingdomOfRats, Age1600 and Callista have the outlook of either teenaged boys or girls.

I think that some threads in the general discussion forum are truely adult, as is most of the haven and some of the other areas. I am sure that you will find real adult thoughts being swapped here, but as soon as you mention dating or anything to do with relationships then the "teenaged lads" will come out to play.

There's another section called "In-Depth Adult Life Discussion" , FYI ladies.

It's a section for serious non-xxx threads
