CodeGrey: I agree with GregCav that he sounds like he doesn't understand emotions. He may be backing away from any emotional talk. So you say something you intend to come across as supportive (like your above text), he just reads "emotional talk" and backs away, probably waiting for you to stop that sort of talk and return to topics he's comfortable with.
I mean, if he's hypersensitive to emotion conversation, it would be a bit like how you might respond to something that upsets you-- just back away slowly, then revisit later.
Maybe try an experiment and text him in a day or two with no reference to your previous text or anything emotional. Be causal and friendly-- like nothing ever happened. If he responds well to this, then therein lies your problem: He's not backing away from you, but from emotion-laden conversation.
Then you'd just have to decide if you can live with that...
