Daisy on shoulder: For my growing up years I always thought tattoos were pretty, but that I would never ever do something permanent like that. Then, I worked at a Day center for intellectually disabled adults. There was this one guy in a wheelchair. He always had Mohawks. He also had TONS of tattoos. He loved talking about his tattoos. They brought him so much joy. I thought, "good for him". ...then I thought, "wait! Why is that good for him, but still something I would never do". So, I did. I got a tattoo to permanently mark myself to remind myself that I'm not better than anyone else.
Heart on hip with my husband's initials: That meaning is pretty obvious. But, it's also the one that's least meaningful to me.
Colorful Watercolor Phoenix on lower arm: I'm a stroke survivor. I'm a paralysis survivor. I've had many, many reasons to have died, but I haven't. I keep coming back from whatever life throws at me. So, I got the Phoenix to symbolize my strength and a "return from ashes". It helps me feel strong when I'm not feeling that way (like right now...I'm septic). Each color signifies a condition I've "conquered". So, yeah, universe...bring it on!
It's okay with me if anyone thinks they are all ugly. They're not for you; they're for me.
My tattoos also have stories like that, they are meaningful to me and each has its own special significance--just like the scars I have, they help tell the story of who I am, what has happened to me, and what I have survived. They are for me, to help me remember people I've loved and lost, things I've achieved, things I believe and feel deeply about. They are me taking ownership of my body, marking it as my own territory, writing my story on my skin.

I got a tattoo as an underage teenager and I REALLY wish I had not. The symbol means nothing to me now and actuly makes me depressed because it's so negative. I had a bit of a "goth" phase probably made worse by feeling isolated because of autism. And I am not interested in that kind of life anymore. Found a very shady man who was willing to do it and we did in his living room. I am probably lucky I did not get some sort of infection or disease but the whole underground dirty aspect of it appealed to me at the time. I don't even know if he had the proper certifications to tattoo.
I would get it covered up but it's black (of course) which is hard to cover and I don't want anything else there. I feel like it would making the same mistake twice.
But I can't say what other people should do with their bodies. However I do find women with tattoos unattractive which makes me a hypocrite I know. Maybe if they are not excessive I can live with it but for example a lady like Kat Von D does not work. All I can think is how pretty she would be without that on her.

my wrists are very skinny and bony, so it looks like there's a chance it'll be a pretty unpleasant ordeal, if only for a while.i guess a downside to wrist tattoos is that, for me at least, they're in the place least likely to be covered by my regular clothes besides the obvious face. i type, drive and draw/paint a lot, so my wrists are almost always in view. massively important to be sure i like the design i stick with, then.
(of course...that goes for all tattoos)

Putting an effort into your appearance as you say doesn't mean you are seeking approval from others--for some people it does maybe, but for others they decorate themselves how they do because they like how it looks. I personally have always dressed for my own comfort and style and not much bothered with other people's opinions on how I express myself in my choice of dress or makeup or tattoos or whatever. Sometimes a person's appearance is not all about other people but really about themselves. From your comment history I can tell you are the sort of person who cares a lot what other people think about how you look and dress, but not everyone is like you.
