I have never once met an Asian who referred to themselves as oriental.
The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs.
Every Asian person can claim that he/she is Asian, and the term is now becoming exclusive to east pacific Asian where is not my homeland. I hate to be sound simple and vulgar(Refer to several countries where I lived before and haven't got very good impression with). I live in another part of Asia.
They would not refer themselves as so, therefore they cannot use this beautiful word, but I can. If everybody uses it, I would not even use it.
I don't think Asian itself would sound... As beautiful as you said.
Orient itself is a much more beautiful word than Asia(Please, don't argue with me abut O...Cusine,etc, sounds disgusting, however, this word is used less often than Asia at least )(Or ‘Indian made’

Any Questions?
It is a very complex thing in my heart to even explain.
