that part isn't canadian, i don't think. as an aspie, i do not understand social graces, and i am at an age now where i simply don't care anymore. not every aspie is like that, obviously, or perhaps not even most. but it is not unusual to come across an aspie who doesn't "get" the social rules.

Im not insinuating all canadians are a**holes. Simply that stating that you're more polite because you're canadian is stupid.

around these parts its hard to please just one at a time.

i was obviously talking about courtesy. every nation has riots and such, but it doesn't mean the people won't say "excuse me" when you bump into them!

Sports hooligans exist everywhere. She did say "in general". Trust me, I've worked call centers for Canadian and American customers... the Americans were usually really, REALLY mean to us agents where the Canadians were not.

thank you, yes. it doesn't make us better or something - we have our massive faults as a nation (just look at our treatment of first nations people, nothing nice about that).

you're telling me that even with that metric f**k ton of land mass in north america that magically people become polite because they live in the green area? Dont make me even bring up the british...

90% of people in canada live less than 100 miles from the american border. So not much of a metric f**k ton.

but even then, if they are mostly 100 miles from the border then im sure that any "american" rudeness would have filtered in by now.

have a look at my link, above. canadians really do have a strange type of etiquette. a lot of it developed as a way to differentiate from the stereotyped americans (not at all true or fair, and probably based on media. but we got it into our heads about how we DIDN'T want to be).

it is quite common for american tourists to wear a canadian flag pin to pretend to be canadian, as we tend to have a good reputation abroad (not that americans are rude - it's that same silly stereotype).

Ok, seeing as you're not getting it ill have to dumb it down.

Why must you portray people to be better or worse than another based solely on their country? This is a generalization as much as all the ones you, me and others in wp constantly gripe about. Yet this one is ok because we all think we are in the right. Saying canadians are more polite is just expanding on that stereotype. Whats next, chinese good at math, brits drinking tea, french great cooks and germans very anal about details? Thats one f****d up world view. Its a view of empowerment, a view which is everything that you and others complain about in a different scenario. But its somehow ok in this one. If anything saying that canadians are more polite than americans is a oxymoron. By showing off how much more polite you are you're making yourself to sound less polite. Explore the option that I used to live about 60 miles near a large city and not only did we or our neighbors ever lock our doors, we left our cars runing when going to buy something quickly at the store and if we were taking our time wed leave the keys on the dash. Yet there was no crime past some minor pot use by teenagers. People werent polite because they felt they had to be, it was genuine caring for each other. Its something ive not found in many places that ive traveled (and you might guess since i fly for almost free that i do travel a lot). I almost doubt canada would have a more utopian place than that. Especially if all they do there is proclaim to be better than americans.


And about the canadian pin, ive considered doing that. Because rude ignorant people in other countries will only look at ones nationality to discriminate them on. Not because of the persons rudeness, not because of the persons attitudes, but just because they are americans.

i didn't ever say canadians were better. you pointedly ignored my example of a historically canadian bad behaviour, and first nations people are often still mistreated in the present day (both individually and institutionally). it's a giant blind spot that we pretend doesn't exist. nothing "empowering" about that.

low crime doesn't equal politeness. we don't lock our doors either, but it has nothing to do with saying "please" or "thank you"

we make a point of being extremely polite as part of our national identity, but it doesn't necessarily make us better people. surely there is something that many americans may pride themselves on?

I live in Texas and I've gone on loads of roadtrips to visit family on the opposite end of the U.S.(north, New York, Minnesota etc.) and save for densely populated metropolitian areas, people get more and more polite as we head North. We would drive because we had so many people to visit along the way. When I was younger my family INSISTED that we drive up to Canada a few times and I was convinced everyone was stoned in Canada because they were so frickin nice every time we went there.

I just felt like sharing. Also hyperlexian is proof that Canada is fantastic, but I don't think she's saying any nationality is better than another? I'm so confused, and " ill have to dumb it down" seems rather rude and unnecessary. This thread isn't making sense to me anymore! I QUIT FOREVER. Meh! Meh, I say!

All the nations of the world have these kinds of generalizations because they're common enough to be notable.

The male/female thing is no different in my book. And at no point has anyone said:
"ALL x EVERYWHERE ARE y! !"
