It boggles the mind how Motley Crue got more women than almost any other band in the 1980s with this look. :?

Isn't it curious how some men seem to think they know what we like, even better than we do?

An opinion is asked, it is given, and then it is argued back.

It's called fishing for justification. This forum is full of men and women who come and ask a question or say something with hope of someone posting as they'd like to. And anyone that doesnt agree fully is a heretic

OP bodybuilds and has muscles, and this thread exists only to boost their esteem and image much like every other thread they've ever made.

I like to think every individual has their own tastes. Yes some like muscly men, and some that otherwise wouldn't might fall for the right muscle man. The court's up for debate on which icons are the real poster boys of such a lookset in the women's eyes and ultimately I don't think that's something a heterosexual male can really answer.

I agree perfectly...

Also, I love the 80s glam rock and effeminate look on men :) For instance David Bowie was hot and not overly muscular.

I really don't get why the OP bothers with these threads.

Kurgan, there are a lot of muscle guys that are very famous right now. You can find them as the main character of a lot of series and movies.

The nineties were the period of the "thin guys" (River Phoenix, Devon Sawa, Ethan Hawke, Edward Furlong, Will Smith as Fresh Prince, cast of Dawson's Creek, 7th Heaven and all those weepy shows...) lots of average, cute or pretty young boys with thin arms and legs and clean look.

Nowadays we are in a very masculine period. We have tv shows full of testosterone. Not only a lot of characters are now very tough, a lot of the plots of actual series and movies are very masculine; Rome, Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men, Arrow, Spartacus, The Walking Dead, Prison Break, Californication, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica... And if I had to talk about movies, I would be writing all the evening. A lot of the actors that play on those shows are very popular among a lot of women, while there are other women that are not into muscles. You know Kurgan, we are free to be attracted to what we want. Every person out there has its own taste.

About Justin Bieber... Maybe it's a kind of obsession in US, because here where I live nobody talks about him. He is popular now because he is a famous singer, as Take That and Backstreet Boys were famous in the nineties. That's all. The only difference is that Justin Bieber is famous now, so this tool called Internet made the interminable bullying and now he is a kind of "reference".

By the way, the most popular Backstreet Boy and the most popular singer from Take That were the youngest and thinniest members of the group. That's because a lot of their fans were teenagers. Just as the fans of Justin Bieber. As Mercifullyfree has said, when you are a very young girl, you are not into Sly, that would be very creepy, you are into the cute boy.

Motley Crue's music was heavier than most other artists of the 80s glam rock genre. Perhaps that's why they got laid the most?

They were more outrageous in pretty much every other aspect of their behaviour as well :P That might have something to do with it...

Do some guys feel threatened or insulted when girls prefer pretty boys or something? Why?

Especially the out of proportion hate for Bieber. I'm not a fan of his, but he's obviously for young girls and it's natural for young girls to be attracted to that "cute boy next door" image. A thirty year old woman will likely be going for older looking men.

They pretended to be "satanic" at least for their first three albums even though they were a glam rock band. lol

Many of the shows you mentioned (Rome and Spartacus in particular) are aimed at men. Game of Thrones doesn't really portray anyone as sex symbols. Most women who rate Daniel Craig or Hugh Jackman as the most handsome men are in their mid 30's or older, which further proves my point about a generational shift to a more feminine ideal man.

While being into Sylvester Stallone (who's nearly 70) at age 17 would be weird, there are plenty of celebrity boys aged 18 to 25 who are far more masculine than any Paradise Hotel pretty boy, any late teen singer with a high pitched voice and any sparkling vampire.

Take a look at who they cast to play Edward Cullen compared to who they cast to play prince Charming in Fear from 1996. I never said women weren't free to choose, but their choices are clearly influenced by the media. Keep in mind that Marlon Brando and Paul Newman in the 1950's had many female fans in the same age group as the Twillight movies do today. As far as boy bands go, if you'd ask Robbie Williams (arguably the most popular Take That member), you'd see that he's about as muscular as Daniel Craig or Christian Bale.

This graphic is stupid. The top row are boys for young teen girls to get into and the bottom are adults. Why should 12 year old girls be attracted to 40 year old men instead of guys who resemble those close to their own age?

I don't know if you visit the tumblr of young women, but it's full of actors from Game of Thrones, Tudors and Supernatural, another show with muscular young men. You can see a lot of gifs with shirtless actors everywhere. You can see tumblrs with fans of thin guys too, because as I said, every woman has her own taste. What do you want? all the girls falling in love with muscles? If the media is doing this right now, the media did it years ago with the muscular men too. It's the same process. Or it's a valid process only when it benefits you?

Marlon Brando and Paul Newman... You need to put them into a context, they did movies in the sixties and they used the "Stanislavski System" portraying very intense and troubled personages that now are out of fashion (let's face it, "The Hustler" is a great movie, but I'm not sure if a lot of people would enjoy it in the 21st Century). Not a lot of people watch old movies.
But if Marlon Brando and Paul Newman were young and doing movies right now, sure they would be considered handsome. Probably Paul Newman would be more popular than Brando.

If you travel to 1960, sure you'll find some men critizicing the women tastes. Sure! "Oh, she loves Marlon Brando, she is an idiot? My mother liked John Barrymore, he was teh man!"

By the way, what about Montgomery Clift? Not muscular, very sensitive, fragile, not handsome but BEAUTIFUL, with soft skin. He was one of the most popular actors of that generation.

About Robbie Williams, he was very thin when he was member of Take That, but he wasn't the most popular, Mark Owen was the most desired of all of them. I know this because I was a teenager then.

Thin Robbie Williams --> http://jasonburton80.files.wordpress.co ... 68x329.jpg

About Edward Cullen... I never watched Twilight, but there are a lot of muscular and tanned men there that have been very insulted too so I got the impression that young boys over the internet love to insult those movies, probably because they can't stand the fact that the girls of their class have crushes on those guys, so they attack them via internet. Why someone insults a very pale and thin man (Edward) and at the same time he insults a very tanned and muscular man (Jacob)? Because he doesn't like that a lot of girls have crushes on those men. Do you imagine the same hate campaign made by girls against Megan Fox or I don't know, the last hot girl that is popular between male teenagers? Sure Justin Bieber bullying is related to that, too.

About that photo... I don't know who the young boys are, but sure they are very popular among teenagers. You are interested in teenagers?

Everyone should just get 70s Big! Not 90s Small! Why care about abs when you can be 70s big!

Does anyone else think he looks like a weightlifting Freddie Mercury? Oddly he's only like 23 in that picture. That's what having a mustache will do, folks.

Anyway, this conversation is ridiculous really. Do some girls like muscles? Do some girls like Justin Bieber? Yes and yes. Some, what do you know, MAY EVEN LIKE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. HOW CAN THIS BE POSSIBLE?! Think about it. As a guy I can appreciate skinny girls. I can also appreciate "thicker" girls, too. The media portrays them both, just in different places. In rap videos for example, almost no "skinny" girls ever. Pick up some fashion advertisement and it's thin girls. Can nobody even fathom that perhaps people can have multiple tastes in something? Like for me, I probably would say Asian girls are my favorite girls. Would I turn down some beautiful European girl because I've decided Asian girls are my favorite? No, obviously not.

I dunno, in my case, though, I do think women like it more often than not, even if they say "I like toned/swimmer/etc" guys. Then again, I look relatively "normal" and don't have like giant arms or anything, I notice with bodybuilding/male body image, it's changed over the years. It used to be more down to broader shoulders, and now getting pecs (man boobs) and big biceps is emphasized a bit more. Like in 1960, the standing overhead press got replaced with the bench press. I know when the bench press become popular, Olympic lifters used to call bodybuilders/people who bench pressed for whatever reason "boobie builders." So lots of people nowadays are caught up in the "chest and bis" thing, and that looks like s**t compared to the 1950s big shoulder look. I also think modelling agencies and whatnot actually still prefer broader shoulders as the first thing, too.

Yay, talking about dudes muscles, so so fun.

A preference for muscles has evolutionary advantages, which is why the ideal changed very little until the rise of mass media.

A Streetcar named Desiree is from 1951, if I remember correctly. It shows Marlon Brando at the same age as Robert Pattinson.

But if Marlon Brando and Paul Newman were young and doing movies right now, sure they would be considered handsome. Probably Paul Newman would be more popular than Brando.

They'd be overshadowed by plastic pop, reality shows and all that... unless, of course, Brando were to portray some mysterious guy in the filmatization of a popular book series for young women. That would shift the male ideal to something more masculine.

Quote:
If you travel to 1960, sure you'll find some men critizicing the women tastes. Sure! "Oh, she loves Marlon Brando, she is an idiot? My mother liked John Barrymore, he was teh man!"

Brando's appeal can be explained by Darwinian means. He's masculine, muscular, intelligent and has a badass voice.

Quote:
By the way, what about Montgomery Clift? Not muscular, very sensitive, fragile, not handsome but BEAUTIFUL, with soft skin. He was one of the most popular actors of that generation.

What about him? He had a small frame, but masculine facial features, a reasonable amount of muscle and was commonly portrayed as macho.

Who did the main girl fall for? Robert Pattinson could look more masculine if he gained 10 lbs of muscle and got a tan, btw. In his case, lack of masculinity seems more deliberate than it does in Justin Bieber's case.

Megan Fox isn't less feminine than previous female sex symbols.

I wouldn't mind dating 19 year old girls. Plenty of girls my age are head over heals over girly men from the Norwegian version of Paradise Hotel, though.

Actually, the reason why the overhead press got "replaced" by the bench press, is that it's extremely difficult to control who's using leg drive and who's not using leg drive. The floor press was essential in bodybuilding since the late 19th century and was replaced by the bench press after WWI.

Largely populiarized by Georg Hackenschmidt, the bench press has great transfering value to other sports as well, we just rarely notice it.
