You guys seem to have trouble understanding that the fact that you find tattoos unattractive on women does not influence some women to not want to get tattoos. I find that amusing--I have visible tattoos and I know that some guys don't find them attractive, and I don't care. I don't want to be attractive to the sort of guys who don't like tattoos, so that works out well for me. Some women really don't care whether you find them attractive or not. That should not be a newsflash.

I mean, do you think Kat von D thinks her tattoos make her look ugly? She probably finds them beautiful and that's why she got them, and I'm sure that matters to her more than whether some random dude on the internet thinks she's now unattractive for getting tattoos. There are people out there who will get lots of tattoos, no matter if some people don't like it. They like it, so they do it. Not everyone lets the imagined opinions of everyone else drive their life choices.

When did we say that?

We said we dislike tattoos. We didn't say we expect no one to get any tattoos because we dislike them. At no point did we suggest that anyone would be influenced to not want tattoos just because we dislike them.

Perhaps you think that things you dislike should be banned. Please don't project your close-mindedness onto us

And I'm sure Kat von D gives zero f***s about what you think about her looks. Her tattoos are for her, not you.

I'm VERY sure you're correct.. especially since she has a tattoo on her right hand, visible in this photo, that says "DILLIGAF." 8)

Just for the record, I think her tattoos and overall look suit her well. I don't find her particularly more sexually attractive because of her tattoos, but I also don't look at them and think they detract from her attractiveness, either.

She looks nice, but she doesn't look like my "type". The tattoos give off a very tough, almost "masculine" sort of air, like she looks like the type of girl I'd see drinking beers, riding a motorcycle, and rocking out. But it's also really stupid of me to assume all this, because all I'm going by is her appearance. I don't actually know what she's like as a person! :P

Years ago, there was an American television program based on crime-related topics. One of its episodes involved a dead teen-ager or college student with several tattoos. After much prodding, the teen-ager's mother arrived to identify the body, and remarked about her son's tattoos which she considered evidence of a dismissive life with no connections to his "proper" upbringing. The autopsy worker (who had some of her own tattoos) explained each tattoo and its traditional meaning carefully and slowly. While listening to the worker's explanations, the mother suddenly realized that her son had been honoring his family, his community and his ancestry -- the exact opposite of what she had presumed for years.

Having just one tattoo myself (a Zuni bear fetish), it represents for me the ancient Anasazis who lived just south of me in the American southwest near Four Corners. It represents the west, strength and patience, and describes my time in the same lands that they enjoyed, respected and protected, and it helps describe those whose descendants might have met my own ancestors. So, when someone presumes to know what it means to me, they are usually, sadly, wrong. Luckily, most Utahns understand enough about our American Indian neighbors and their history to appreciate symbols like my fetish.

Good catch! I didn't see that at first, thanks for pointing it out.

Yeah, she definitely gives no f***s about dudes who don't like tattoos. Get over yourselves, guys--women get tattoos and don't care what you think. It's a brave new world.

We're not trying to influence how Kat Von D thinks. We never were. Is that so hard to understand?

I don't think they were criticizing the people who have them, and I am not even sure why this is even in L&D. I think of it as just another form of art criticism, no different than if we were talking about paintings or sculptures.

Exactly. Any Captain Obvious out there who wants to argue that it's their body, and they can do whatever they feel like to it can just quietly close this tab in their browser. That point has been beaten to death already. And we are not wrong for having opinions or sharing those opinions on what we do and do not find attractive. If someone wants to get tattoos, nobody here is stopping them.

As a person with tattoos, I have been approached by people who have a problem with my tattoos who actually do seem to want to encourage me to not get any more, like I am "ruining my beauty" or somehow betraying others by being a woman and getting visible tattoos. This is a common reaction (I'm sure I'm not the only person--and not hte only woman--here with tattoos who has had other people try to tell them what to do with their own skin.) So it often feels like when someone complains about other people's tattoos, they are trying to tell people with tattoos not to get them. Because let's be honest, this thread was not just to express "I don't want tattoos on my own body" by the OP, but also to say that they don't like when other people get them. You're not just talking about your own feelings about your own skin and what you will and won't do to it, you're talking about other people's bodies and choices and being judgemental of them.

And yes, as a woman I am being tired of being told by guys with no ink that I'm not attracted to that they don't find my tattoos attractive. Stop sharing your opinion of my tattoos with me because I don't care that you find them ugly and it's annoying. I want to date guys with ink of their own. If you don't like what you see, keep it to yourself. Telling me does not help me or you, it just makes me like you less and want to not talk to you anymore. I don't go up to strange men and tell them the things I don't like about how they look ("Hey strange dude I've never met before, I don't like how you dress shlubby" or ""Hey random guy, I think you could stand to lose a few pounds") so I don't understand why men do this to women.

I get lots of compliments on my visible tattoos from other people with tattoos or people who just like them, but I don't understand the people who need to share that they don't like them. What is the point of telling someone that? It's bizarre.

There are lots of guys who will do this to women who dye their hair vibrant colours, as well--they will tell them that they would be much prettier without the crazy green/pink/whatever hair. I also got this about piercings from older male relatives: "You'll scare men away" or "Why are you hiding that pretty face behind all those rings/bars". It's a weird (and on the receiving end feels possessive) phenomenon. I think it comes from men thinking they are being helpful offering the information to women of what they find attractive, so women can alter their appearance to be more appealing to more men--because they assume the choices women make are all about what men find attractive and they want to help facilitating those choices.

There are a couple guys in this thread already who have specifically said they don't like tattoos on women and find them to be too "masculine" and that they make women less sexually attractive. Women have every right to come into this thread and say "Guess what, I'm one of those women and I don't care that you don't find it sexually attractive and lots of other women don't care either and will keep getting tattoos anyway, so you might as well get over yourself and accept that reality and stop wasting your time complaining about the things you don't find attractive about women."

TL;DR If you don't want to discuss a beaten-to-death topic, don't make a thread on that topic.

Yes, we all get criticised for our choices. I'm sorry you think you're above criticism.

You think this is a gender based thing? Not for me. It makes no difference to me if I see them on a man or a woman.

If you don't like the topic of this thread why are you reading it?

I never said I don't like the topic, I said I find it weird. Just adding my two-cents, which I have a right to do. You can't expect to make a thread like this and not hear from the other side of the argument in a discussion forum.

So you tell guys that you don't find their tattoos sexually attractive, do you? Because you specified here that you don't like them on women because you think they make women ugly and more masculine-looking. You made it a gender based thing, not me.

I just reread all my posts on this thread. In one post I said tattoos are ugly. In none of my posts did I say tattoos are "masculine-looking". Your words, not mine. Please don't put words in my mouth and then try to argue against them. That's called a straw-man argument.

Perhaps you were thinking of something mr_bigmouth said. He may have different views than me. This may surprise you but men are individuals. Just because one guy says something that doesn't automatically mean I have the same view as him.

I know you really want to turn this into a gender based thing so you can claim misogyny. Such cheap tactics won't work on me.

I know you'd love it if I said that tattoos on women are immoral and tattoos on men are awesome but I don't think that. I think tattoos are equally ugly on both sexes and also kind of lame.

Of course I expect to hear from the other side.

I just don't get why you think I'm trying to influence you or Kat Von D to not get tattoos? I'm not trying to influence anyone to do anything.

perhaps we should create a bitter art snob subforum, and move this there.
