Well, I have another quick update. I hung out with the two couples again. It was nothing romantic where single men don't belong: it was a brunch buffet. I'll even give the couples credit for not acting overly lovey-dovey at the table. Heck, I actually got a word in when I tried, although I jokingly crossed myself (sign of the cross) when one couple mentioned marriage. That evoked good laughter among the couples, since they know I'm an atheist, as well as my anti-LTR stance.

It was a nice brunch overall. And yet... there seemed to be a toxic cloud hovering over us the entire afternoon, that prevented me from fully relaxing, and weakened the buzz from the Bloody Marys I had. I just couldn't put my finger on it; the cloud... was... just... there. I kept thinking, with fear in my mind: "I'm going to end up like this too!". I pounded two shots of whiskey right after I came home, and browsed some escort sites to take my mind off my fear. On the plus side, I ate so much at the buffet, that I barely had anything for dinner: just string cheese wrapped in a tortilla, and a cookie.

What's really ironic about this situation, is that instead of motivating me to model myself after my relationship'ed friends---like the two couples motivate each other to keep up the commitment level---seeing my friends is making me swear off relationships for the rest of my life. It's not sour grapes, in case anyone says it is. I can easily settle down with the next woman who shows interest. But then I'll end up like my friends. I want a relationship with real fun, not "love" fun; but this doesn't exist in my age group.

That toxic cloud was probably really you're pre-occupation with not wanting a relationship/being afraid of relationships...aggravated by being around people in relationships. Just never form a long term relationship...no ones going to make you.

Close, but not quite. I never experience the toxic cloud effect when hanging out with one couple. But as soon as multiple couples appear in one venue, home or public, the toxic cloud moves in and darkens the sky. It almost feels like the non-verbal communication or some spiritual energy---heck, or even body pheromones---the couples pass back and forth between each other, has a strong negative effect on me, as I get caught in its crossfire.

Which raises a question. If I somehow overcome myself and have an LTR, and bring my girlfriend to introduce to the four people all at once, will she feel the toxic cloud too? I don't want to expose her to that, but it's also unfair of me not to introduce her to my friends.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not tearing down my friends or their girlfriends. It's when all four of them get together, toxicity ensues. If just one couple---no problem. I did notice, however, that the girlfriends have very strong personal chemistry between each other. Maybe that contributes to the toxicity.

Maybe it's flirting or foreplay and the four of them do more together than you ever see?

No, lol! I know them well enough to say they're too "serious" for that. Otherwise I'd be feeling jealousy, rather than frustration and bewilderment at them not being fun couples, and swearing off LTR's as a result. The chemistry I saw between the women is strictly emotional, not sexual. (Although I could almost see a quantum cloud of that chemistry in the air.) Each girlfriend's "love" statements are directed at or describe her respective SO and no one else, and the greetings between them are just light, friendly hugs.

Plus, even if your suggestion were true, I've done some wild things with the escorts I sexed, enough to outcompete my friends in that department. ;) I just can no longer "debrief" about it with my friends over a beer, because they're always joined at the hip with their girlfriends. My debriefing now consists of grinning like an idiot on the train ride home :D, with the onlookers wondering what the hell is wrong with me.

Why do you hang out with them if they're that irritating?

I'm not knocking you being irritated with them, I would be too, and I generally don't hang out with couples who act this way because it's silly. (lucky I'm old enough that couples my age don't do this - we're way past this stage of behavior).

They're only irritating as multiple couples. With 2 or more couples on the scene---who went as far as synchronizing their relationship progression---the social dynamic turns toxic for some reason. I feel like "that pathetic loser who tagged along", even when someone invites me. When it's just 3 people---me plus one couple---then I actually enjoy their company. I feel like a distinguished guest, lol.

But it's a big no-no in the NT world to say that someone shouldn't come because of whatever, unless that person actually hurt you or threatened you. Exponentially so if "someone" is a couple. So I have no leverage there. :(

As for wanting my own LTR, the truth is this: I lack the game/skills needed to attract a fun, exciting girlfriend (doesn't need to be very attractive), and the types I can attract aren't the ones I'd enjoy being with. Namely, the hyper-serious types. Not to mention, most women my age are far more focused on relationships than fun.

Well, yeah, but you don't HAVE to hang out with them. You can decline the invite.

In the past, I have declined invites and said rather bluntly but nicely "I don't want to be the fifth wheel," as my reason. Of course, they always say oh it won't be like that, but it always is, so I hung back. Most couples are boring anyway and most of my friends who got married and had kids I no longer see. It seems like once you have kids your life is over and you become boring. Sorry if that offends anyone but I don't really care. :) My current friends are all childless and they remain interesting.

I've done that before. But only for things where I knew I'd have an awful time. Where it wouldn't be just a toxic cloud, it'd be a toxic hurricane. Namely, when I got invited to go the beach (freshwater) with them. Seeing them act lovey-dovey in a restaurant is annoying, but easy enough to tolerate with some alcohol. Seeing them frolic on the beach hand-in-hand, like Baywatch lifeguards, would be beyond my tolerance level.

I have single, childfree friends through Meetup, but they're comparable to acquaintances, not long-time friends, so the social dynamic is different. I do enjoy it, though. There are couples in my Meetup groups who act affectionate with each other sometimes, but the "couple toxicity" doesn't permeate the entire group, like it does with my long-time friends.

Which goes back to the original question: Why are my friends' LTR's so serious? What's causing them to act that way in hangouts with multiple couples, and only those times? Is it the social chemistry between the girlfriends?

"Is it the social chemistry between the girlfriends?"

If I had to guess, I'd say yeah, that's probably it.

A lot of women bond over dumb things that reaffirm their social standing. Like when one of them gets engaged, you have to go show off the ring to your girlfriends so they can all oooh and aaahh over it. And when one gets pregnant, suddenly they all want to be pregnant. And then once the baby is here, they bond over the baby and play dates, buying the SUV and the family stick figures in the back window. It's like the script you follow to 'fit in' and 'be normal.'

It's also completely mindless and no wonder at all why there are so many divorces later in life when you realize all that stuff doesn't actually make you happy.

Speaking of the chemistry between the girlfriends, this reminds me of funny stories, just not funny haha. During years 2005 thru 2008, I went to clubs almost constantly. Not Latin clubs, which I still like because of their friendly crowds, but mainstream "bump and grind" clubs that I now refuse to go near. (Crowds there are generally horrible.)

On many nights, I'd see something like this. A group of two or more couples would walk in, occupy a spot on the dance floor, and form a circle. (Or with just two couples, stand opposite each other.) Girls would dance on the inside while kissing and fondling, guys would dance on the outside while grinding with their respective girlfriend. My reaction was: "Man, those are fun relationships!! ! I can't wait until I settle down, so my friends and I could party like that too!" (With that said, those couples were 25 at the absolute most.) Imagine that: I actually wanted to have a relationship!

Fast-forward to 2016. The relationships I'm seeing among my friends make me want to put a noose on my neck and kick the chair! And even if I do find a girlfriend eventually, the social dynamic amongst my friends' relationships is so boring and toxic (which I refer to as "serious"), that as her boyfriend, I'd feel morally obligated to keep her as far away from it as possible. Maybe I'd introduce her to one couple at a time, while not bringing her to all-couples hangouts.

Yeah that behavior you saw of the women kissing each other and stuff is more attention-seeking behavior. Young women do this sometimes to get attention from men, especially while drinking. The alcohol loosens them up.

You keep mentioning how off-putting a long term relationship would be to you. But once again, you're drawing your conclusion from a very small population.

I hate to say something as lame as "not all women," but really, not all women are like that.

I'm an atheist and have never wanted to have children. That kind of life would be like a horrible punishment to me.

(And I would like to add how difficult it was to find a partner who was like me in that regard. If you think women are lame you should meet some single men whose only focus is to settle down, get married, go to church, and have his wife start popping out his kids. Ugh.)

Luhluhluh, I think we're the only ones following this thread. :)

I'm aware that "not all women are like that". (Known in the PUA community as "NAWALT".) But about six months ago, my friends started saying "I have to ask my girlfriend. I can't go without her. That's not what love is about.", whenever I invited them to go somewhere with me, even weightlifting at the gym or running on a scenic trail. (Both are masculine activities that don't even come close to cheating.) The answer they'd later give me was always no. That's when I smelled a rat.

The population I'm drawing the conclusion from isn't that small: it's not just two couples. My entire family and all my close friends gave me some very negative messages about marriages and LTR's. Consider...
* My parents argued constantly right in front of me, with screaming, crying, and threats of divorce.
* Other family members didn't have happy marriages, either; a lot of arguing and only minimal romance.
* My parents' friend made a joke how I will have to obey my wife just as I obey my parents as a child.
* My grandmother told me to forget about my personal interests in an LTR, because only "feelings" matter.
* Dating self-help books warn about losing the sense of self in an LTR, which my friends already did.
* My friends' relationships were simply the final straw that broke the camel's back.

Oh, and I'm a childfree atheist too. Welcome to the club. :)

Aspie1, I still say they're having fun sharing their joy. It connects them. But from the outside, it's tough looking in, especially when they go on and on and on... It's boring at best, frustrating or depressing at worst.

You need not fear an LTR like theirs though, because you've already set a powerful intention not to have one. You can't have one without consenting, so you won't.

I'm agnostic, atheist by some definitions, and I strongly want to remain child-free. Not being under pressure to have children before my time runs out, if I do find an LTR, I won't lose myself, and I'll work hard to preserve the fun. You seem to feel this is impossible? If so, I don't believe you. It's difficult but not impossible, so why not remain open to the possibility?

If you actually love another human being beyond comprehension there is no alternative, the clunky and cantankerous clouds of ''this is serious business'' on occasion descend and dangle above all else, no matter what supposed point you hover above in life, being magnetized toward a creature that evokes and draws blood through the deep and gnawing pangs of ''love'' is the most serious endeavor you can commit your whole frame toward, it is a very serious destination to sail towards and every ounce of energy ought to zoom there if you mean it with great gusto, it's rarer than you would believe.
