So all other situations are appropriate?

Just use your common sense. I'm willing to think you already know not to if they have a BF too, or if they're busy stressing out over supermarket shopping etc.

When they are married is super obvious. I assumed you were just giving me a sarcastic non answer.

It is appropriate if they are clearly single (and by "single" I mean also dobn't have a boyfriend), if there is no professional relationship between you (coworker, customer/worker, doctor/patient) and if they are an adult.

Inappropriate:

If they are with somebody else- husband or boyfriend

If there is a professional relationship between you

After those criteria have been met, you still have to be willing to accept a rejection and not try multiple times. Hitting on somebody outside those criteria is acceptable. It becomes unacceptable if you do it again after they reject you. That's when it becomes "creepy". The boundary between "acceptable" and "creepy" is frequently the man's ability to accept a rejection. A man who doesn't is a giant red flag to a woman of possible predation and definate annoyingness and he will be labeled "creepy".

Oh my, that is ABSOLUTELY right. I never really thought about it before.

There are lots of men who either don't check for a ring first or who intentionally target married women in the hopes of stumbling across one who wants an affair. Thus it is not super obvious. Check for a wedding or engagement ring.

Hmm that counts in many ways too. If a man gets rejected then does the following, its creepy:

Loses the plot and goes nasty and dangerous on you
Acts "butthurt"
Tries to play the "feel sorry for me card"
Hangs around you but doesnt approach after he has been rejected

You're much more likely to be ignored, rejected, thought creepy if the woman hasn't first given you some kind of signal (usually nonverbal) that she's at least open to chatting with you. If she's making eye contact with you and smiling, that's a good sign; if she's trying to make conversation with you or making a little physical contact with you (touching arm, for example), that's another good sign. Approaching a woman who didn't even know you were there until you started talking to her will get you no where fast unless you're particularly charming (and you do have Asperger's syndrome, right?).

- If she hits you.

It's acceptable toward any woman whenever she is available to talk. If you're a random guy starting a conversation, it qualifies as hitting on her and she'll know it. If she's not interested, she'll find a way to mention her significant other or how she has doesn't have time to talk. As a man you're expected to understand this.

It's only inappropiate when you're been rejected and still continue to hit on her.

Btw John, these questions sound much more promising than the sex ones. Keep up the progress.
