I never dress nice just because I hate dressing nice.
But whenever I do, I always get looked at pretty well.

Just wondering if gals judge clothes.

i don't judge clothes, but i judge more general cleanliness.
like if someone is just wearing scruffy clothes, fine.
but if they're dirty and unclean that's a different story.

i prefer the relaxed look anyway - i spend most of my time in ripped jeans and hoodies anyway, so who am i to judge?

I always hate it when i dress up and people give me compliments. To me, if I'm wearing, say, a suit, and someone compliments my looks, to me they're complimenting the clothing, and not the man inside (as they sure wouldn't give me the compliment if i weren't wearing a suit). And yet I can't say anything about it due to social norms... it's the worst feeling in the world.

I still think that complimenting a man in a suit on his looks (when you otherwise wouldnt) is complimenting the suit rather than the man. Same applies to women and dresses. For me, hearing "you look good/handsome/etc today" while wearing a suit make me think the underlying theme is "but you look like s**t every other day". Thats why I see it as insulting...

tbf, i'm more likely to say 'love the suit!' than anything else.

but i get the point. - i just take the compliment where-ever i can. >.<

I love getting compliments but I love myself to much to care if they are complimenting me or not

I only judge clothes if they smell or are filthy.

Depends what you mean by dressing nice?

I don't mind going business casual for work or even wearing a three piece suit when the occasion calls for it. If by dressing nice you mean wearing a designer brand shirt and a crisp pair of jeans or khakis, its a pretty diverse world out there, I'm sure you can find something that works. Myself I tend for the lighter and less road-tarred (over-logoed) stuff by Nautica, Ecko, Phatfarm, Re:verb, North Face; stuff that sort of rides the edge between preppy and urban-style, Ecko in particular makes some very comfortable shirts. Pants: I had friends swearing up and down that I should be buying them at express, I tried that but I just can't stand over-tight jeans and how they look. Then again that still doesn't get much attention, I *should* be wearing lots of Abercrombie if I really wanted to gear my clothing toward sex appeal but - I can't bring myself there, meeting my own judgment in the mirror still means too much.

A suit is symbolic. People respond to symbols.

Yes, they do. However that doesn't mean you always have to dress "nicely", as a guy can be wearing old jeans and an old T-Shirt and still be considered "hot"

Women tend to make personality and type judgments of men based on their clothing, rather than hottness judgments.

For example, my cousin concluded the other day that a clerk who helped us in a shop must have been gay because he was wearing fancy jeans, aka "gay pants". I disagreed...I didn't notice the pants but fancy jeans are common here and sometimes the only jeans one can easily get.

Generally, I would just make sure you are wearing relatively clean clothes...no food or anything on them, and I would avoid sweat pants as day clothing, unless you are working out or ran to the market to get some snacks for the game that day, polyester slacks unless you are wearing them as part of a business suit, those button up shirts with prints on them....a lot of conservative older men wear these but they don't win points with the ladies.

Clothes also say a lot about the person in them and their taste.

I can't say I'd be turned on by someone who dresses like a rapper.

What do we mean by "nice"?

A suit and tie for a guy would be considered very nice, conventionally, I would think,
but when considering ONLY clothing and what different types connote,
such a person wouldn't be appealing to me at all-
quite the opposite.

"Nice" is dependent on the person judging.

I second the thumbs down to rapper-esque clothes-
if I can see a grown man's underwear in public, it's over before it began.

I'd say almost everyone makes snap judgements about people based upon what they wear, even if it's just on a subconscious level. That doesn't necessarily mean women prefer men who are fashionable, though.

For a girl, I'm not very trendy and tend to gravitate towards simple, classic little black dress type of stuff. I also wear little make-up and don't really understand the point of accessorizing. (Keeping things minimal can often be more 'chic,' anyhow, in my opinion!) So, when I see a guy who looks as if he puts a ton of effort into molding an image for himself, it's rather intimidating and a turn-off, to be honest. I guess I just figure that if he's that concerned over his own apperance, he's probably silently judging mine or giving me a makeover in his head.

Personally, I'd take a down-to-earth, comfortable-in-his-own-skin type of guy wearing a potato sack than someone who looks like he spends more time getting ready than I do any day of the week. But, I guess it depends upon what type of girl you are trying to attract. There are plenty who do worry about clothing brands and the like.
