AS isn't an illness or a disease, it's part of who we are. I know there are hardships for us, I live with them every day of my life. But the only illness here is ignorance and apathy from those who judge us. THEY have made you feel this way about yourselves, they've made you feel helpless. I can see this in many of your posts. The only disability we face is living in a world designed pre-dominantly around NT strengths and weaknesses and NT biases.
But many of us are great people, some of us are just as independant and just as capable of taking care of ourselves as any NT person on the planet. Sure, we might not grasp their social rituals, but the added intellectual gift more than makes up for that.
I'm reaching out here, I'm trying to tell you that you are more than a label, more than a disability, more than an illness or a cancer. You are a human being, and furthermore, you are Aspergian. Be proud, for it is people like us who make history, event, write, create, by challenging the norms. Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, they were Aspergian. They were OUR people. So were Emily Dickinson, Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver, Openheimer, Nietzche, most likely Aspergian.

I completely agree with you, but sometimes, especially for teens and the younger crowd, it is the hardest thing in the world to feel anything except bad. As we learn and grow, we gain perspective like you and I have about life.

im surprised that not so many people see that. i am currently reading his complete opus and find it seeping through every word so far.

as for the content of your post, i absolutely agree. yet, when some of the things we desire can only be had in interaction with the world, sadness may occur. but still, i think you are right preaching a more positive point of view. as difficult as it may be, its not difficult because of us, its difficult because of the incompatibilities between nts and aspies.

I totally agree, Snake. I laughed when I read your list. All I wanted to be when I grew up was Emily Dickinson. I wanted to live in an attic and write. That was my dream. Maybe it's an Aspie dream. I always felt like I understood her.

I've always felt that Nietzche was a little Aspish myself.

Thank you for the great post. I have often said that Roger Bannister has AS traits as well. He inspires me because he is one who defied all of the stereotypes to make it in life. I know I could never approach his success in any area, but he still inspires me to do my best.

I have to agree with what has been said here, i have had to endure so much apathy from the so called 'Norms' in school just because i was different, im 18 now and have grown more at ease with being an aspie, although i will be honest and say ti still huants me and gets me down from time to time. i had heard that apparently Einstien and Bill gates could be autistic, as they are geniuses. =)

Sure that's cool. I know first hand how hard it can be to get through highschool for us, those are some tough times. Especially around 11 or 12 or so when I hit puberty. Truth is, nobody's gonna win the fight for us, we have to step up to bat and enlighten NT society. Many will be prejudiced, but this is no different than any other civil rights coarse in history. I strongly believe a good 1st step would be bringing Aspergians closer together in our own communities, housing, schools, banks, businesses, recreational outlets, etc, ran by and for Aspergians. It'll also majorly help us organize, while reducing some of the pains of rejection from NT society. Once we've prooven that we're capable of taking care of ourselves, maybe we could some day integrate into NT society, as equals. This is my dream.

Biggest NT comeback they would say, ”Everyone is different. With their own strengths and weaknesses, society is no really bias to anyone in particularly ”

and they stand up to their proclaimed values in word and deed, as long as nobody tests them through being different and having differing strengths and weaknesses.
being different will lead to being labelled as anormal and deviant, therefore being a potential hazard to all that is good.
having different strengths will lead to envy
and having different weaknesses will lead to being picked on those weak spots constantly.

quite typical nt behaviour, in its mixing up of rational and emotional territory. the least little bit of rationale would clear the situation up with no-one harmed.
but then, they get to talk their heads fuzzy about how good they are AND fulfill their herde-animal drives at the same time. (and they wont be pissed at their inconsequence either)

I've recently discovered that the reason they call me a "creep" isn't because I'm actually creepy, it's because they have no word in their limited vocabulary for me, so they lump everything they don't understand into that category and call it "creepy."
