I was cringing during the "date" scene where Alex (holding flowers) was wondering how long he would need to wait for his date to show up because, when I lived in Studio City, I made plans to meet an acquaintance at Marix on Santa Monica Boulevard. Five minutes ... 10 minutes ... 15 minutes ... 30 minutes ... no show, no call, no e-mail message. Classy.
It was this experience that convinced me to adopt a 15-minute rule. Even in Los Angeles, traffic is never so bad that, if the destination is known, arrival should never be longer than 15 minutes after the designated time. And, when it is longer, an apology should be offered quickly thereafter using an e-mail message, at least. My 15-minute rule has never failed me. If the other person doesn't arrive before 15 minutes, I leave precisiely thereafter, and treat myself to something entertaining in place of the planned date. Their loss.
So, I was pleasantly surprised that Alex's experience didn't resemble mine. Good.
