Making threads here for geek subcultures was pointless & totally ignored, so here's another. I made this thread because it occurs to me a lot of us just feel excluded from here despite the forum's stated purpose. Say as much or as little as you want; just don't be strangers unless you feel like it.

I see people on here saying this is pointless all the time, we're usually wrong about that.

But I am sometimes.

I'm hoping this thread can help those of us who don't see a choice in the matter become more comfortable with others.

I like people, particularly those who put energy into understanding me.

I'm still tremendously unsure of myself around people.

i've always been cripplingly shy.

i'm more or less invisible everywhere i go. i feel like an alien, an outcast regardless of what i do or who i'm with or where i am.

pretty much all of the major relationships i've ever had were the result of people approaching me first.

I'm not sure how or why I have any social life. I think it's mostly down to other people even though I've definitely done some of the approaching, it made me so nervous I can barely remember. I'm constantly forgetting how strange it must be talking to me.

I’m very shy in person, not so much here. I have no social life

I feel shy on WP sometimes.

In real life (due to having quite an effective veneer) I am usually only shy around potential mates.

I am a chameleon. I am different in different circumstances. I'm shy at first with everyone except the most talkative people who carry the conversation, but once I get to know people I can often become less shy especially if they gain my trust.

I am most shy around men I am attracted to and women my own age. The average woman and I don't have the same kinds of interests. I ran into some women I used to know when I was younger at a party recently and we all stood around awkwardly like we did when we first met 10 years ago. Yeah, I'm never gonna be friends with them. I just don't know what to say to them and they don't know what to say to me.

I always feel like men are judging me. Well the potential relationship ones. There's so much social dancing in the getting to know each other. You don't want to come on too strong and scare them off. You don't want to be too distant and make them think you don't care. It's a minefield and that stresses me out and I feel self conscious.

When you are anxious making conversation is so much more difficult. It becomes stilted and awkward and you want the ground to swallow you. But you can't explain that to the non-shy. They don't get it. They just tell you to be Yourself.

I'm camouflaged about 95% of the time if I'm honest. I can actually hide in plain sight as a result. I just disappear simply by being silent.

I wish I was as smart as you folks in this thread.

I’ve always been jealous of shy and smart folks. They always seemed to have more substance than me.

People get smart because they listen instead of talk. There’s virtue in being the shy listener.

Totally agree. I've always been attracted to shy/introverted women and put off by outgoing ones precisely for this reason. There aren't nearly enough shy women out there, because they're all told that they HAVE to be outgoing to land a guy - maybe to land an insecure troglodyte, but not a man of any substance.

As for myself, I'm extremely quiet and introverted, but not shy. People mistake my quietness for shyness, when it's rather down to simple indifference to the overwhelming majority of excuses for human beings around me.

I've always been very shy offline but I'm not very shy online usually. Online is the one pl,ace I feel comfortable to express myself & it's mostly this forum nowadays.

I'm dumb & smart. :jester: All the pixel perfect engineering in the world has nothing to do with my clumsiness or social graces. I'm a serious geek but I have my dumb blonde side.

Aspects of this can be funny & all but it still gets me thinking that my ineptitudes mean I should just stay away from everybody until they contact me.

I used to think I was really intelligent in comparison to my peers, and that the things I didn't know about were trivial,

and that not knowing about them wasn't down to ignorance but good taste. As I've gotten older the more gaps I've

found in my knowledge that I fall into, and the more often I rely on the odd bit of trivia know-how that I've

unintentionally soaked up from those peers to help me climb out.
