There seems to be a severe shortage of female aspies in Portland. Either that, or you're all hiding from me. I'm not that scary, I promise! I'm just English, I'm not really from outer space. Although, if you were to look at the collection of 70s and 80s scifi I've got, you might wonder.

Yes, there is an Aspie group in Portland, but if there was anyone there looking even for a friend to hang out with, it was obscure even by Aspie standards.

Part of the problem is that I'm not exactly the most forwards, outgoing guy on the planet, I've only the vaguest notions of socializing and even those skills have been rusting away for the past ten years from total lack of use.

"Ok", you're thinking. "These are all the reasons for NOT wanting to know this person. So why should I?"

Perhaps because I'm pretty sure I'm good company, that I've a wide enough range of interests that you have a good chance of actually having an interesting time, that I'm as happy walking over the hills as having coffee/tea at one of the myriad tea shops as watching a movie or video.

Yes, being undemanding and low pressure gives me better odds of being struck by lightning whilst winning the lottery, but I can't be the only one in the world like that.

now, that sounds like you are a fine fellow and ready to test the dating/relationship waters.

but you for got the important parts: I.E. your "sorting criteria"

what age group are you looking in?
how far away geographically is 'too far?'
what are your 'deal breakers'' ( i.e. kids, drugs, alcoholism, hangs upside down from chandelier until dark, unemployed, gold digger, etc.)

just curious. . .

Merle

Age: Anywhere between 18 - 48 would be fine. Imaginary components are OK as well.
How far away: I can manage long-distance relationships up to 10,000 miles. For in-person, I'd probably limit it to a 50 mile radius as a rule-of-thumb with exceptions for anyone, well, exceptional.
Deal breakers: I really can't think of any, but I'd be wary of vampires, axe-wielding maniacs and Margret Thatcher. Hanging upside down on chandelier sounds fun - know anyone who does that?
Other sorting parts: Sorting hats are permitted. Binary trees are also fine.

What, you're more than ten thousand miles away? :)

Seriously, my requirements are ludicrously easy to meet - well, with the exception that the other person must be able to handle the fact I'm a geek. :) That can prove tougher. By far the hardest thing for me is to find a woman who considers me to meet THEIR expectations! :)

It's a mixed bag. Their website is http://www.aspdx.org/ and I'd definitely encourage any Aspie in Portland OR to at least bookmark the site. Resources are a Good Thing, even if you never actually use them. The fact that they are there is important and more than a little reassuring.

So far, I've found the meetings - like I said - to be a mixed bag. However, your mileage will certainly vary and the fact that the group is fairly large and growing is a good sign that others are getting a lot out of it and that I probably will myself if I keep going.

Interesting site. That list of doctors is just what I was looking for.

Thank you for the link. I think I might be too afraid to go. But I will think about it some more. I think I really need some kind of aspie contact.

You said hanging from chandeliers might be fun, indicating you have not done it before. I think Merle  may prefer someone who has some experience of hanging from chandeliers - lol

But, 'tis hard for even the most perfect
match, when separated by such distance
as lies physically between the two of you.

You guys should really arrange to meet up.

That's an idea. Anyone interested at meeting up at Peet's Tea and Coffee, Powell's, or somewhere else that is easy-to-reach, neutral and great for conversation?

I'm in if you do it while I'm there. (And I hope you do!) I'm coming back Saturday and leaving at/around the 12th.

Voting Powell's, or maybe the 24 hour Starbucks at Burnside & w 23rd.

Both of those would work fine with me. If you're coming back Saturday, then would you be more comfortable with Saturday evening or sometime on Sunday?

Saturday is coming up reaaaaly fast now, so we need to pick a time. I can't do from 11am to 5pm, but any time before or after is fine with me.
