Haliphron - why do you believe it is one-sided? IMHO, relationships should come from mutual attractions, so a strict reliance on one or the other is absurd. As for societal expectation, my ex-fiance proposed to me - I'm not arguing that women have choice, but to think one or the other has priority or primacy is not something I agree with or understand.
Not entirely makuranososhi,
however, its pretty clear to me that men and women are NOT on equal footing as far as the mating game is concerned. I have no doubt this is biological rather than societal; please do remember that we ARE biological beings and we DO indeed have instincts and intrinsic drives that transcend cultures. Its not that men dont get to choose at all as much as it is that women have the FIRST pick , and then the man can choose to accept or reject. Are you aware that there has been research, quite a lot of it in fact, on the dynamics of human sexual selection so this isnt just from my own experience but scientifically aquired knowledge?

There's an excellent program series that was aired on TLC some years ago called
The Human Sexes which discusses this issue. I strongly recommend you view it sometime. But What is it about the application of reductionism to human behaviour that you object to so much?
