But that's the thing; what if you don't see the other person passing by?
I know that I, personally, do not pay attention to people. I pay attention to the inanimate objects around me. So if an acquaintance were to walk by, I would not notice.
Even if I did see the other person, I'm usually too involved in deep thought to get my brain to send the command to form my mouth and throat muscles into the correct shape and breath out enough air to utter a meaningless greeting.
