Just making up something else you have to do now is ok - NTs do it all the time. It's just one of their weird social things (like asking "how are you" but not really caring, or saying "have I gained weight" but expecting you to lie and say no).

We all have to learn that NT social communication is about doing and saying things as polite signals. So if you just say "you are making me crazy, I'm leaving", they get offended. But if you say "sorry, I gotta go make a phone call", to an NT you are STILL saying "you're making me crazy I gotta leave" BUT you're doing it with a polite signal so they don't get offended.

It's totally stupid, but as long as they run the social world, we have to learn enough of their polite signals to get by.
