London meet-up Sunday 31st August

You are welcome! Just a suggestion: Could you combine something else with coming to the meet-up? I do something similar. I enjoy staying in London (and the UK), visit places, do errands, etc. In this regard the meet-up is a part of my trip.

I'm not sure how do you imagine such a huge meet-up. When lots of people are there, things may get too social for an autistic/aspie. That's something we have to deal with. Conferences make more sense to me. We could learn from other autistics and perhaps scientists. After the conference, in smaller social circles we could discuss what we learned at the conference and share our life experiences. To whet our appetite for seeking out new special interests there could be brief seminars introducing to certain sciences and arts with an autistic 'edge'...

That?s exactly what I was planning on doing! I have some friends in the UK that I?ve been meaning to visit for a while now, but still haven?t decided on a date, so when I realized that people here organize meet-ups I thought I could do both on the same trip.

And I hadn?t thought through the huge meet-up, it was just something that came to my mind while I was writing. I just thought it could be more effective (meeting as many people in one go as possible) and figured if it was a huge meet-up maybe people from further away would consider trying to come too. But you?re right, a conference would definitely be better! I saw a thread for an International WP conference, but the latest posts were just about meet-ups, so I don?t know if any such conferences have actually been organized or if there are any being planned at the moment?

I'm new to the site, and recently discovered I have aspergers.

I have never met anyone else with this condition, at least not to my knowledge. So, I am interested in meeting others. I don't now what to expect, nor do i know what i will say, or do, or learn. But I feel it's important that I should. I certainly hope to know more about this horrible horrible thing. This curse, as I see it.

I do have some questions about a meeting though. What sort of, well, what sort of thing are we going to do therE? will ther ebe a cafe where can sit fonw and chat? or is it just more of a social outing, where we can be wth out the NT's?

I don't know much about meet-ups myself either, never been to one before in the UK. I honestly hope there will be a few of us at the time of this meet-up I'm trying to organize. I'm not a native English-speaker and my language skills somewhat suffer the lack of practicing lately. I'm desperately trying to fit in at my workplace and meet the expectations, it has become harder than ever before. It all has a toll on my other interests, including the only foreign language I can speak at a fairly good level.

Please don't see having an ASD as a disastrous thing. It's more like a difference, with both challenges and opportunities. You are still you, no matter what labels society happens to invent at the time. Every people have the opportunity to fit in somewhere in the great scheme of things...

It seems that the Guildhall leads the poll by 2, but it's unlikely we can go there. I was just looking for information about the admission and found this:

As far as I know, this means we must look for something else as the place of this meet-up, because by the time it will reopen I will be at home in Hungary. Sorry for putting it in the poll without having looked deeper into it.

I think it would be better to discuss the whereabouts of the meet-up in person. We can meet at the Chandos pub near Trafalgar Square and then decide where to go. (This way at least we have a better chance to actually meet each other.)

Well, no one had come, apart from me. Whether because choosing Sunday wasn't a good idea in the first place, or failing to present the leading poll option, the Guild Hall, or something else, I don't know. The Chandos was closed but I was standing at the corner from 10:54 to 11:30.

This is the second time I failed, so I think in the future someone else has to organize it, someone from here, whom you can trust more. I guess I just held my hopes too high.

I'm sorry no one else turned up. I tried to be there on time, but the busses were diverted and as London bridge is closed from the line I take, I had to catch a difefrent train into town. I did arrive there at just past 11:30, so we must just have missed each other.

I'll be comepletely honest though, I was feeling very apprahensive about the whole thing anyway. I don't know if its jsut part of my condition or whether it was meeting people off the internet. But it was definately causing some mixed emotions for me. Part of me was quite relieved that the pub was closed and no one else was there. It meant an easy escape. At the same time though, I am rather disapointed, as I now this is something I needed to try. Hopefully we can meet up sometime in the future.

On the plus side, I did walk up charring cross road to Foyles, and bought two books on our condition.
"The Austic Brain" by Temple Gandin, and
"The autism spectrum nd Depression" by Nick Dubin.

I did enquire about the DSM 5 reference book, but it costs almost £100!! Naturally I didn't buy that one.
