In Canada, of the many universities and colleges are in urban areas, so lots of people who grow up in urban areas end up going to the colleges/universities near their hometown. I don't feel ready and can't afford to live on my own at this point in time. Some people even choose their college based on where their friends from high school are going. When I was at the orientation, they did discuss how to meet people and make friends, and the girls sitting in front of actually LAUGHED when the leader said that "you're friends (from high school) may not be in your classes".

Well, surely not all the people are local. Are there any clubs or anything there?

I just realized another part of my problem: often, the people who I want to be with are girls, but I don't approach them unless I know it's socially appropriate to do so because I don't want to be seen as I guy just trying to hit on all the girls, so in that situation I either wait until there is some other guy in the group, or I'm actually close friends with one of the girls there and I know it's okay.

On the plus side, I've made up with the one friend I was talking about today. Relationships are a lot of work.
