that reminds me of a scene in monk... when monk is at some store, a black person approaches him and shakes his hand - and monk begs his assistant to give him a disinfectant handkerchief. :)

ah Sorry for misunderstanding.
Sounds to me like an even crazier guy then; unless it's common to walk up to strangers and offer them help looking for products - then his reaction kinda confirms it.
Pretty crazy. . . Good to hear that he didn't turn out to be dangerous!

I'm white, and living in a city (Baltimore, MD) that is a haven of poverty and racial tensions. The issue comes up fairly often because my social inattentiveness leaves me frequently misconstrued as being an arrogant racist; sometimes to the point of a couple of life-threatening scenarios that I have experienced.

You could have diplomatically deflected what he said, if he was trying to pick you up. Unfortunately, such tact is unavailable to Aspies sometimes, so your reaction might have offended him for that reason. He probably did not accept your obvious rejection of him, which you provided inadequate explanation for and in an untactful way, so he chose his own conclusion, perhaps warranted by his own past experiences, that you were racist.

Accusations of racism are not something that can be taken lightly if they are unfounded in truth. They can be deeply hurtful, although perhaps not as much as true racism itself. I experienced a couple of incidents where I was accused of racism while working a cashier at a store that were somewhat harrowing for me. I hope that it never happens again to me, so I understand some of what you are feeling.

I was at a convenience store today and I was looking for something to drink, and there was a black guy who walked up to me and was really forward....hey little missy...what are you looking for today?...do you want me to help you find what you need?...he was just a customer in the store...
.......I would have reacted the same way regardless of the person's race or gender for that matter...but I had to walk away from him, because I am not comfortable with that sort of abrupt informalness from a stranger....

Anyway, he acted all offended and tried to make it out to be a race thing....Saying that that I was thinking that I wanted this N-word to get away from him (his words)....and i told him that was not what I was thinking at all....I just like to take my time and look for my own drinks...but he had to keep going on and on about it..

It was kinda frustrating.
It is not the first time something like this has happened to me.
I am the same shy, akward, standoffish person around people of all races...of course including my own.
I hate having it something that I need to be self-conscious about.
That sucks! I haven't had that happen, mainly because I'm able to look friendly even though I feel anxious, but I feel for you.

People can do the opposite too.

A number of times people have gotten the totally wrong idea and thought I had crushes on them, because of smiling too much which I tend to do, and especially in the past I've gotten stuck for words and said nothing inappropriatly or over-talked or laughed - classic 'crush' behavior as seen in countless cartoons - totally not how I'm feeling. Its funny but not, when you have to deal with the results.

I just don't think I've ever been able to pull off 'casual' too well.

That is an unfortunate situation. I doubt it will help, but know that it was not your fault. Ironically, he is engaging in prejudice while accusing you of it.

I can very much relate to this, the other day I had to wait for a friend outside a supermarket and I was getting really worked up and stimming and a black woman came up, put her hands around my shoulders and said 'Jesus loves you' I staggered away from her, it was nothing to do with colour of skin, religion or anything, but no one touches me, only family can sometimes touch me, but she was uber insulted. I don't think that way, it doesn't even make sense to me, im constantly having arguments with my grandparents because their sometimes racist and homophobic views just make no sense. Im like a dog with a bone.

Hey, I'm new here, but I thought I'd comment on this.

If a stranger (of any race) walked up to a NT stranger and put her hands on her shoulders and said, "Jesus loves you!"

... The NT person would react very negatively. I can guarantee it. It's not a race issue. It's a violation of personal boundaries issue -- an invasion of your private space. Being touched by a complete stranger in an intimate way (and grabbing someone's shoulders would be intimate) is just not acceptable. Particularly if they then try to shove religion at you.

Why should you be expected to react positively just because you "look different," know what I mean?

She was out of line. And then she was even more out of line to be insulted when you reacted badly.

What, did she think because you didn't look "normal" it gave her carte blanche permission to invade your personal space, touch you, and try to push her religion on you? Uh-uh.

She was out of line. I wouldn't worry too much about it, regardless of how you reacted.

He sounds like a jerk to me. My guess is he was trying to flirt with you and got pissed off when you didn't respond.
I think you acted entirely appropriately.

Consider how most whites respond when they are accused of being racist. It generally throws them off balance making them desperate to convince their accusers that they are not racist. I had a Black guy I was working with who could not refute a point I made in an argument. His response? He said "you're a racist". My response was to say back "No I"m not! And to prove it I'll agree with everything you say!". At that point he had a shocked look on his face and I quickly followed up with "Yeah, that's what you wanted me to do isn't it?". Well that individual learned not to do that with me anymore. I just want to point out that there are people in this world who, if you hand them a club, they will hit somebody with it. That kind of thing has happened to me, but I've never worried about it. I just think, "Woah, that guy was crazy!" and laugh to myself and go about my business. I mean, some people are just plain crazy. Convenience stores are good places to meet crazy people, as are buses.

Yeah..like I said...the guy seemed pretty crazy..though the fact that he was rampaging loudly through the convenience store like a bull in a china shop on speed...did not prevent my gut initial reaction.

Yeah...I know that people of all races are capable of racism.
