Is this just British people or... ?
I wonder what the difference would have been if you went into the bar with a smile on your face, even if it was a fake smile?
Put yourselves in their position, how would your feel if you worked their and somone can in with a miserable face and just sat at the bar saying nothing. It's not a very positive image is it?
And what does your miserable face say to them, basically "I don't like you" I would imagine.
It basically says "I am not happy to see you"?
I am not saying some people are not stuck up, they may treat everyone like that.
Also it depends on the type of bar, if it an upbeat trendy bar and you look down and miserable you just will
look out of place.
You would probaly be better off in a more 'run down' type of bar where the staff are not so snotty.
Presumably as you noticed them looking at over at you then you were looking over at them 'in an agressive and suspicious manner". Let's face it that is how you are talking about them now, pretty much so I guess that is how you came across to them?
Different bars can be very different in their attitude to customers.
Actually it just crossed my mind that you may have looked like a drug dealer!! (seriously!)
But basically looking miserable does not exactly endear you to people does it?
