Eye contact - anyone else put a lot of thought in to it?

Like Robert312 said above (page 2), give a small, friendly smile and look away.

And, the tricky part is, this is not a hard and fast rule, rather it's a casual part of your repertoire. Think right-brain pattern recognition, that kind of thing. It works so much better if done casually (and inherently imperfectly!). Certain types of art are the only analogies I can think of.
